'It's not just the girls. Young male stars like Justin Bieber are sexualised too': Sinead O’Connor hits out at the singer's image

By Bella Brennan For Mailonline

She’s never been one to hold back when it comes to her beliefs - last year she famously locked horns with Miley Cyrus in an epic series of open letters alleging the young singer was ‘allowing herself to be pimped’ by the music world.

And now Sinead O’Connor is taking aim at Justin Bieber, claiming the pop star is a product of the entertainment industry and has been overly sexualised for commercial gain.

Speaking on Britain’s Magic FM radio show the 47-year-old explained: ‘I think that people focus an awful lot on the female aspect to this, but it is also the males. The very young male artists who are practically children or look like children are also being sexualised,’ she said.

‘Justin Bieber is a great example. When he came along he was only 16 years of age.’

‘Obviously he was extraordinarily talented, so I'm not trying to negate that, but he was very much being sold on his sexuality,’ the Irish singer added.

‘Britney Spears, of course was quite inappropriately young to be sold in that way, dressed up in a school uniform, but I think that really people forget that the guys are going through it as well, and I think that is quite important,’ she concluded.

It's not just the women: 'He [Justin] was very much being sold on his sexuality,' Sinead told Magic FM

Meanwhile, the Irish singer has also lifted the lid on the dark side of the industry to Billboard magazine.

‘The day it dawns on you that [this business] is pimps and hoes - and that you’ve been the ho and didn’t even realise it - can be a bit head-wrecking,’ she told the publication.

Adding: ‘And then you realise, “OK, I’m a hoe, and maybe I can do something useful with that,” like slap on a wig and a latex dress and get a lot more attention for your album than you would have if you had gone on there with your E.T.-looking bald head.’

As for her ‘proudest night ever’ the Nothing Compares 2 U hitmaker said it was her infamous performance on Saturday Night Lie in 1992 when she ripped up a photo of the Pope mid-performance.

‘I knew s*** would hit the fan. [It was] an artistic gesture made by an Irish female Catholic survivor of child abuse,' she revealed to Billboard.

‘There was a battle in the streets for the honour of God. And in the musical community there was f*** all but tumbleweed.’

Sinead is about to release her tenth album entitled I'm Not Bossy, I'm The Boss on August 11. The name of the record is inspired by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg’s Ban Bossy campaign.
