'I've never looked that good breast-feeding!' Olivia Wilde talks to pregnant Savannah Guthrie about THAT photo with baby Otis

She caused a stir when she was photographed breastfeeding her son during a Glamour shoot.

But Olivia Wilde was quick to play down the idyllic picture during an interview with Savannah Guthrie on the Today show on Monday.

'That grew out of a very organic moment,' the 30-year-old star laughed, when her heavily pregnant host expressed excitement at the idea of mothering being so glamorous.

'I was working, I was shooting the cover of Glamour, and I needed to feed my son Otis,' the former House star explained. 

'Either I was going to do it off-camera or on, and I thought, "You know what, shoot it, because this is part of my real life."

'But no, usually he has a diaper on and I've never looked that good breast-feeding - and I never will!'

In the snap, the Tron actress posed in a diner wearing a black and silver dress, clutching her naked baby to her right breast.

'I hear Otis may or may not have ruined that gorgeous dress?' asked 42-year-old Guthrie.

'Yes!' Olivia exclaimed. 'Yes, he christened it.'

Posting the photograph via Twitter on August 5, Olivia emphasised the reality of the situation.

'Otis ordered milkshakes. Luckily I had some on me. Then he peed on my dress. Good kid. #boobfood #whennaturecalls' 

Savannah, who is going on maternity leave on Tuesday, asked Olivia whether she and fiance Jason Sudeikis fought over the choice of name.

'Not with Otis,' she replied. 'We had battles over other names but he loves that one and I was happy because I wanted to name him after Otis Redding.'

Asked for any other further of parenting tips, Olivia advised patience.

'I think patience. Patience with yourself, patience with the baby and understanding that you're both learning and you'll figure it out. But it's just so much fun! Everyday's an adventure.'

Olivia was promoting the Global Citizen Festival, which features acts such as Jay Z, No Doubt and Carrie Underwood.

'It's the only advocacy oriented rock festival,' she revealed. 'So you can actually earn your way into the festival by participating - and it's focusing on women and girls worldwide and ending global poverty.'
