He's blonde now? James Franco channels a '90s boy bander with highlighted locks in new Instagram selfie... but it may just be a wig

He revealed his new hair color the best way he knows how: with a selfie.

On Monday, James Franco showed off his newly dyed blonde hair to his 2.4m followers. The 36-year-old actor's hair color was noticeably lighter as he paid homage to the 1990s with his caption, 'that late 90s bleached look.'

It is not known if he really dyed his hair or was wearing a wig for a new project.

In the shot, the Child Of God star ditched his dark brunette locks for a blonde hairdo that was styled straight instead of his usually wavy hair.

He stared into the camera for a selfie photo with his rock 'n' roll hand gesture wearing a red T-shirt.

James shared the picture with his fans on the set of his new film, Michael; he appears to be in a hair and makeup trailer.

The actor has been shooting his latest flick in New York along with co-stars Zachary Quinto and Emma Roberts.

The Justin Kelly directed movie tells the story of Michael Glatze, the founder of Young Gay America magazine who toured the country as an advocate for young gay teens before he renounced his sexuality and married a woman.

Franco plays Glatze, who has been dubbed as the ex-gay activist turned fundamentalist Christian pastor, while Quinto will play his former gay lover with Roberts playing Glatze's wife.

He is once again teaming up with producer Gus Van Sant after working together on the film, Milk, in which James portrayed Scott Smith, the younger lover of Harvey Milk, an American politican who became the first openly gay public office elect portrayed by Sean Penn.

'It's not like my mission to tell the stories of as many gay men as possible,' he told The Daily Beast.

The 127 Hours star continued, 'although in some cases, I think it is the point. I guess that a lot of the figures I love were gay.'

This is not the first time the Of Mice And Men actor has undergone a transformation for an acting role.

On July 22, James posted an Instagram photo of himself with a bizarre tuft of black hair in a behind-the-scenes snap from his new web show.

He wore a bald cap as a make-up artist painted the appendage firmly on his scalp while a patch of black hair stuck out through the top of his head.
