BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (PART !)
I fished the South Santiam River today, a tributary of Foster Reservoir. Foster Dam impedes the migration of fish from the sea, so no anadromous fish (such as salmon) are present in these waters. With no chance to hook into a truly giant fish, I carried only light tackle (an ultra-light Daiwa rod and 4-lb test Trilene).
It was a successful trip, and I caught about a dozen resident fish. As nice as these fish were, in a strange lapse of my laser-like focus, I couldn’t help but notice the beauty of this river. In the future, I’ll write a post about this river with only minimal mention of fishing. Until then, here’s a video of my two best catches, whom I have named Beauty and The Beast.

SKIPPING SPOONS IN HD
When fishing from a boat, the skilled bass fisherperson will often skip weedless jigs toward shore, into the bushes or under docks to the shallow water where bass are hiding. Here, in this video, I demonstrate how to skip spoons for trout in the opposite direction, from shore to deep water. This allows you to avoid getting your line caught in overhanging branches, which can be a problem if you’re casting conventionally.
BTW, this technique is my own innovation, and a quick scan of the internet reveals that I’m probably the first person to describe it. IT CAN BE OUR SECRET!!!!

FISHERMAN vs FISHERPERSON
Why do so many people continue to use the term “fisherman” when there are so many women who fish?
PROBABLY OUT OF IGNORANCE!!!!
SO LET’S GET THIS STRAIGHT
The correct, gender neutral term for a person who fishes is “fisherperson.” Personally, I enjoy using the term, “fisherperson,” because it creates some interesting ambiguities.
For instance, when I drop “fisherperson” in casual conversation, people are always like… Is “fisherperson” a real word?
I DUNNO. MAYBE.
And when I use “fisherperson” to talk about one of my fishing buddies, like Davyd, it really makes you wonder… Is Brian implying that Davyd’s not really a man????

I’M A FISH ASSASSIN
Quartzville Creek was misnamed. It is not full of quartz, it is full of G$ld, and the trout who live in this creek are G$LDEN.
You DRINK G$LD when you take shots of G$ldschläger. These trout DRINK G$ld EVERY TIME THEY OPEN THEIR MOUTHS.
To be clear, they are NOT GOLDEN TROUT. I say they are G$LDEN because they are beautiful and because they live in a creek that is FULL OF G$LD.
AND A RAINBOW TROUT FULL OF G$LD TASTES VERY G$$D.

I LIVE IN OREGON
And in my backyard is the Santiam River. It is beautiful. In the past, it has flooded and destroyed entire towns.
SALMON AND STEELHEAD COME UP THIS RIVER.
There isn’t a run going on now, and people say not to bother fishing the river, but HOW DO I KNOW THEY’RE NOT LYING TO ME????
WHAT ARE THEY HIDING????
I’M TIRED OF ALL THE SECRETS.
