Sir Ian McKellen plays cupid by helping romantic man pop the question to his Star Trek obsessed boyfriend in proposal video

He is often seen out and about enjoying music festivals, theatre outings or even pulling funny poses with Star Trek actor Patrick Stewart.

So it’s hardly surprising that Sir Ian McKellen stepped in for his best friend by playing cupid for a director named Brett Lotriet Best, who required some help to propose to his Star Trek fan boyfriend, Khalid Shawwa.

The Lord Of The Rings star was next on the list to help the romantic director by appearing in his proposal video thanks to Stewart's ‘unavailability’.

The YouTube video starts off with Best holding up signs which read: ‘There is a question I wanted to ask, but I had to be sure.

‘We all know how you feel about Star Trek's Captain Picard,’ he added, when talking about Stewart’s infamous sci-fi character. ‘So I searched the galaxy for Patrick Stewart and finally asked his best friend for help!'

Since Stewart was not able to take part, McKellen emerged on screen and was seen holding up a board with the boyfriend's nickname, which read: ‘Mookie — will you marry me?’

The 75-year-old British actor went on to say: ‘Khalid, I've got bad news for you — it's good news as well — but the bad news is, Patrick Stewart is married.

‘I married him. Well, no, I was the minister at the wedding. He's not available,’ he teased. ‘The good news is that Brett is available. So, think it over, do the right thing.’

Best then remerged with the sign: ‘Will you marry me? I would like to explore the universe with you.’
