'People change and grow apart': Demi Lovato explains why she unfollowed former BFF Selena Gomez on Twitter

By Lizzie Smith For Mailonline

They made their first foray into showbusiness together as child stars, before bonding further as they found fame as young adults.

Now Demi Lovato has opened up on what went wrong with her once close friendship with fellow pop star Selena Gomez.

'I think it's just one of those things where people change and people grow apart,' the 21-year-old told Andy Cohen on Thursday night's Watch What Happens Live.

The relationship between the pair publicly fell apart when Demi unfollowed her former bestie on Twitter back in July before allegedly tweeting and deleting: 'Swimming away from the bulls*** bye b****.'

'I plead the sixth if that's in the game,' the 21-year-old said jokingly when asked about Selena.

She had already used her get-out clause by 'pleading the fifth' to a question about the most scandalous thing a Disney star had done.

The singer also doesn't appear to hold much of a torch for Selena's on-off boyfriend Justin Bieber as she joked she wanted to kill him.

When asked by Cohen who she would want to 'shag, marry or kill' out of Joe Jonas, Simon Cowell or the Never Say Never hitmaker, she quipped: 'I'd kill Bieber. I'd kill Simon. F***, I'd kill Joe, too!

'No, Joe and I are good friends, so I wouldn't kill him. I'd keep him around.'

When asked again which one of the trio she would have sex with, she replied: 'None.'

Demi and Selena met back in 2002 when they got their big breaks on Barney The Purple Dinosaur, which they appeared in for two seasons.

As they each made the transition into pop stars the childhood friends supported one another, with both eventually seeking help in rehab at different times.

Just six months ago when Selena's ex Bieber was arrested in Miami for drag racing, it was Demi who supported her over dinner.

And last year, former X Factor USA judge Demi said: 'We've been through a lot together, we've had periods of times when we grew apart and we just didn't really talk.'

But she added: 'Now we are in a place where I think we realised that life is so short and that when you have people in your life that love you so much then, you should just always be around them.

'Everything about her, she has a great soul, she's talented, she's beautiful, and she will always be really, really close to my heart.'

Meanwhile, Selena is apparently feeling very zen about the who thing.

On Friday the star posted an instagram shot showing her high up in some hills overlooking the ocean standing on one leg with her hands above her head in a yoga pose.

In the serene snap, which she didn't caption, Selena is wearing a black crop top and tight black leggings.
