Jennifer Hudson's brother is in police custody after allegedly repeatedly stabbing a love rival in the face in front of his wife.

Stephen Simpson is said to have gone into a jealous rage at his estranged wife's apartment in Michigan overnight on Monday.

He was being held in custody in Michigan on Tuesday and is expected to be charged with home invasion and attempted murder.

According to WWMT, 45-year-old Simpson, who is the singing star's half brother, has a history of domestic violence, and police claim he knifed his victim several times, including in the face, before they fled to seek help.

He was already on probation after being arrested several times in the past, most recently for assaulting his wife on Super Bowl Sunday.

Officers are unsure whether Simpson's wife or her lover was the intended target of the attack.

South Haven Police Department Detective Detective Adam DeBoer said: 'She locked herself in the bathroom until he left. It appears to be an ongoing feud over a woman.'

Neighbour Torrey Hunt opened his door at around 3am to find the victim bleeding and begging for assistance.

He said: 'I open the door and see blood everywhere. He was stabbed in his chin and his chest, he had puncture wounds in his chest and his arms and stuff.

'He said someone knocked on the door, he thought he was knocking on the door for somebody, and he started getting stabbed up.

'I am thinking he could die any minute.'

Another resident Krystal Miller said: 'It was pretty scary because there was a lot of blood everywhere.'

Miss Miller claimed Simpson had been at the home numerous times in the past screaming and pounding on the door.

The suspect arrived on his own at South Haven Police Department for questioning at around 2 pm on Tuesday.

The victim was treated at hospital receiving about 20 or 30 stitches, before being released and is expected to recover.

It is unclear whether the suspect, whose has the same father as Jennifer, had a close relationship with the singer, who also won a best supporting actress Oscar for her turn in 2006 musical drama Dreamgirls.

Whatever the case it is sure to bring up horrific memories for the 32-year-old, who shot to fame after appearing as a contestant on American Idol.

For in 2008 her mother, brother and nephew were murdered by William Belfour, the estranged husband of her elder sister Julia.

Prosecutors said he killed the three family members because he was angry Julia was dating another man

Darnell Donnerson, 57, and her sibling Jason, 29, were discovered shot to death inside the family home in Chicago home, while her missing seven-year-old nephew Julian King was later discovered in the city's west side area, and died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Belfour was convicted on three counts of first-degree murder and is serving was sentenced to three life sentences at Stateville Correctional Center near Joliet, Illinois.
