They've won millions of fans playing convicts.

But on Monday the stars of Orange Is The New Black were certainly pleased to trade in their jumpsuits for frocks as they celebrated 12 nominations at the Emmy Awards.

Taylor Schilling, who was up for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy went for a simple but stunning cream halterneck gown with sexy mesh detailing.

The Zuhair Murad frock hugged the 30-year-old's curves in all the right places as she walked the red carpet.

Some of her co-stars opted for more colourful creations, with Laura Prepon turning heads in a dramatic green number by Gustavo Cadile with unusual structuring and a long train.

Kate Mulgrew, who was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress, kept things simple in a blue dress which featured sheer sleeves and a neckline.

Laverne Cox admitted she grew emotional while being fitted with her stunning custom Mark Bouwer dress, which was white, slinky, and featured an elegant train.

'He didn't even sketch it, he draped it on my body,' she told Giuliana Rancic as she arrived at the bash. 'And there were moments during the fitting, two, I started crying because it was so beautiful.'

After revealing she hasn't had ice cream since 'well, vacation', the 30-year-old added: 'I watch this every year, like usually my whole plan is to wake up in the beginning of the day, and I turn on E! and watch all day long.'

The genre breaking series brings Netflix's total to a whopping 31 nominations at the awards ceremony.

The Guest Actress award was already given to Taylor's co-star Uzo Aduba, who beat out her fellow inmates Cox and Lyonne and burst into tears when Morgan Freeman handed her the trophy at the Creative Arts Emmys.

Uzo, however, says there's no bad blood among her co-stars, telling E! News, the ladies of the wildly popular Netflix series are just thrilled to be a part of the Emmy party this year.

There wasn't even a hint of jealousy or competition in Uzo's tone as she told the news site: 'Sometimes we joke about it being Survivor-like.'

Uzo continued: 'But we are totally excited and we love each other and are just happy by the idea that there are three of us in a single category. It's just humbling, truly humbling.'

'We're just, like, loving each other right now,' she added. And when the gang got together for dinner recently, the Emmys 'wasn't even a part of the conversation, not even in the realm of discussion.'

Laverne, meanwhile, is breaking down another barrier: She's the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for an Emmy.

'It gives me hope that anything is possible. I'm a black trans woman from Alabama raised by a single mother from a working class background. And I think in a lot of ways, my story is what this country is about and should be about,' Cox said in an interview Wednesday.

'There's a lot of strife going on in the world right now, particularly (for) the folks in Ferguson, Missouri - sending love to them - that I think we need a sense of hope and possibility,' she added. 'We need a lot of love and I hope my story inspires people.'
