Gigi Hadid takes a trip back to the 1980s as she pays homage to Anna Wintour's first ever Vogue cover

Vogue has paid tribute to Anna Wintour's first ever cover for the magazine with a shoot starring Gigi Hadid.

The model-of-the-moment, 19, replicates the smiling, windswept pose of Israeli model Michaela Bercu on the November 1988 cover in a photograph taken by Sean Thomas to celebrate the relaunch of Vogue.com.

That Gigi is pictured clutching that vintage issue only serves to highlight the remarkable resemblance between her and Ms Bercu.

Ms Wintour's original cover, of course, is worthy of the tribute. The idea of styling a $10,000 Christian Lacroix sweater with blue denim was a completely new one that stunned readers when it was published - the original high-low dressing.

Gigi's customized A.L.C. Covington sweater worn with Guess jeans is an homage to that look.

And the image, shot by Peter Lindbergh, was so natural-looking, the magazine’s printers actually called Ms Wintour to check there had not been a mistake.

Aside from her likeness to Ms Bercu, Gigi's status as the model everyone wants to hire made her a perfect choice.

In an accompanying interview, she says: 'Since the day I started, I’ve been very happy with my body.

'I never felt the need to change for the industry; [her agents at] IMG know I don’t want to be two pounds soaking wet.'

It is a refreshing attitude that is being rewarded by brands who can't get enough of her. In the past year she has been cast in a Tom Ford campaign, posed for Sports Illustrated and landed a spot in the Pirelli Calendar.
