SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: From swim starlet to IMF queen
It was a watershed moment for IMF chief Christine Lagarde on Wednesday, after she revealed she is being questioned by French authorities over her handling of a €400 million award to disgraced businessman Bernard Tapie in 2008.
It’s not the first time the 58-year-old has made waves. As a teenager she was part of the French synchronised swimming team (pictured below in a rare photograph) before going on to practise law.
Her legal background will no doubt come in handy while battling the current allegations, although her swimming skills might prove more useful: she could always try a quick getaway down the Seine.

Billie pines for home
Billie Piper pictured with her father-in-law, actor James Fox drinking the local vino whilst on holiday in Greece
Ever swigged the local vino and wished you hadn’t? Then pity Billie Piper as she let her hair down in Greece yesterday with her father-in-law, actor James Fox, after the end of her run in Great Britain at the National.
The pair put on a commendable show of trying to enjoy a bottle of pine-infused retsina — very much an acquired taste. The 31-year-old actress is holidaying on the island of Skiathos with her husband, Lewis star Laurence Fox, and his family. Earlier this month, traumatised Billie pulled out of a performance after her car collided with a 16-year-old cyclist hours before she was due on stage.
Who better to comment on the fact that top state secondary schools add an average £21,000 to house prices than newly ennobled Labour peer Baroness Rebuck? Penguin Random House chairman Gail Rebuck, widow of Labour peer Philip Gould, used to live with her husband and daughters Georgia and Grace in Bayswater. They moved in the mid-Nineties to be just minutes from Camden School for Girls, where they sent their eldest daughter. Talk about social mobility.
St Paul’s Girls’ School tops the tables for exam results. Even the school’s name requires perfect knowledge of the apostrophe. But it may come as a surprise that its quest for excellence stretches to its utility staff. St Paul’s is seeking a ‘Plate-washer Team Leader’, whose ‘work must be of a quality that ensures the standard of catering at one of the UK’s leading independent girls’ day schools matches its reputation for excellence in education’.
