Ryan Gauld scores first goal in Sporting Lisbon colours as 'Mini-Messi' fires in for Portuguese giants' B-team

By Michael Gadd for MailOnline

Former Dundee United wunderkind Ryan Gauld has scored his first goal in the green and white of Sporting Lisbon after finding the net from outside the box for the Portuguese club’s B-team.

Gauld, who moved from Scotland to Lisbon on a £3 million deal in the summer, put his side up 2-0 after the hour with a left-footed drive that took a massive deflection to loop over the Desportivo de Aves keeper’s head.

Sporting Lisbon B went on to win 3-0 as 18-year-old Gauld continued his bid to impress first team boss Marco Silva after being dropped to the second tier.

Labelled the ‘Mini-Messi’ during his time at Dundee, Gauld has struggled to settle with the Lions in Portugal’s Liga Scottish Football Association performance director Mark Wotte said the move will serve the teen well.

'He will still be training with their A squad players on a daily basis and that will help him improve as well,’ said earlier this month.

'I think it is a clever move from Sporting as it will make sure he can play a game every week and help him settle in.’

Billy Stark has included Gauld in the Scotland Under-21 squad for their European Championship qualifiers against Slovakia (September 4) and Luxembourg (September 8).
