He plays a detective in his highly-anticipated series that is set to make its debut later this month.

And Ben McKenzie has already proved that he isn't afraid of getting his hands dirty.

The 35-year-old actor was seen with stage blood all over his suit and hands on Thursday while on the New York City set of Gotham.

McKenzie had a blank expression on his face as he strutted around with red dye all over his clothing while on location near Penn Station in the Big Apple.

His stained ensemble was a far cry from his casual outfits on The OC as he donned a grey suit, smart light blue shirt, navy tie, and black leather brogues.

Despite the crimson splotches, the actor looked dapper in his ensemble as he kept his light brown hair short.

Also seen on set was a woman who appeared to be dressed as a villain on the show as she pointed a gun toward the camera.

She wore a clinging black leather bodysuit that featured a sheer paneling and silver metallic studs around the shoulders.

The mystery actress had her short locks in a pompadour and wore dark make-up including a swipe of burgundy lipstick.

Warner Bros. Television is producing the series that is delving into the origin stories of Gordon and the motley group of villains that made the fictitious city famous in the Batman comic series.

McKenzie plays Detective James Gordon, a new recruit in the Gotham City Police Department, that happens to be tackling a major murder that leads him to meeting the child Bruce Wayne (the alter-ego of Batman), played by David Mazouz.

The show will feature other popular characters such as Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee), Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor), Riddler (Cory Michael Smith) and Catwoman (Camren Bicondova).

The dramatic series, which also stars Jada Pinkett Smith as baddie Fish Mooney, is already making waves despite not airing a single episode yet as it has already signed its streaming deal.

Deadline reported on Tuesday that Netflix has reached an agreement with Warner Bros. to become the exclusive subscription home of the anticipated series in the US in addition to other countries which the streaming network operates.

Though numbers have yet to be released, Nellie Andreeva from the entertainment site said: 'No one is discussing figures, but I hear the deal is worth about $1.75 million an episode in the US.'
