He's one of Hollywood's friendliest characters.

But Hugh Jackman was photographed looking rough and tough as he took to the streets of Manhattan with his new crewcut do on Saturday.

Sporting no shortage of stubble, the 45-year-old actor showed off his slowly growing hair after he shaved it off for a movie role almost four months ago.

But it wasn't only the Wolverine star's newly groomed look that drew attention when he stepped out to take his pet dog for a stroll.

Coming straight from a session at a local gym, Jackman showcased his muscular physique in a grey singlet top that went a long way towards highlighting his bulging biceps.

Ready to work up a sweat, he wore a pair of dark blue shorts that finished just above his knees and tied a jumped around his waist.

The look is radically different from the one the Australian star has been sporting since June when he shaved his head and groomed his facial hair into a bushy moustache and pointed beard to play infamous pirate Blackbeard in his upcoming film Pan.

In January, it was announced that the X-Men star signed onto the Peter Pan tale and shortly after stars Amanda Seyfried, Garrett Hedlund, Rooney Mara and Levi Miller were added to the rest of the cast.

The film, directed by Joe Wright, promises to be a new retelling of the classic tale and is set to release on July 17, 2015.

Jackman celebrated the end of filming earlier this week with a visit to the barber's where he took a pair of clippers to his scruffy beard.

Documenting the event in a brief Insatgram video, the actor is seen looking shocked at the transformation and whispers 'wow' to camera.
