KOCHI, MARCH 13. The veteran freedom fighter, CPI leader and former MLA, N. Sivan Pillai, died at North Paravur on Saturday morning. He was 87. Sivan Pillai, whose political life spanned seven decades, had been elected to the State Assembly in 1957, 1982 and 1987. Born in 1917 at Kedamangalam as the son of Keettedathu Janaki Amma and Kalapparambil Madhavan Pillai, he jumped into the thick of the independence movement in 1936, by becoming a member of the Indian National Congress. He was involved in all the major milestones during the freedom struggle, including the Quit India Movement, the Struggle for Responsible Government in Travancore and the Paliyam Sathyagraham, demanding the lower castes' right for walking on the public roads of Chendamangalam. He was imprisoned for almost seven years. Sivan Pillai, who had been ailing for the past one week, died at 4-20 a.m. at a private hospital in North Paravur. He is survived by wife Chellamma, three sons and a daughter, including the former MLA and CPI leader P. Raju, Radhakrishnan, Raghu and Ganga. The body will be kept at the North Paravur Town Hall from 9 a.m. on Sunday for the public to pay their respects. The cremation will take place at 10 a.m. on the premises of Keettikkal House. The former Chief Minister, P.K. Vasudevan Nair, the CPI State secretary, Veliyam Bhargavan and the CPI leaders, V.V. Raghavan, K.P. Prabhakaran and K.C. Prabhakaran were among those who paid homage to Sivan Pillai.
