Jose Riga has no intention of resigning from his job as Blackpool manager despite chairman Karl Oyston’s repeated attempts to undermine his position.

The toxic situation at Blackpool took yet another turn for the worse on Tuesday after it was revealed that Burton manager Gary Rowett was approached to replace Riga, who is officially still the manager at Bloomfield Road.

Chairman Karl Oyston is understood to have contacted Rowett and held discussions with the former Blackpool player on Tuesday. However, Rowett has rejected the job outright.

Riga is understood to be furious over Oyston’s repeated attempts to force him out after the chairman resolved to replace the manager at the end of last week.

Talks with former Burnley manager Owen Coyle were at an advanced stage over the weekend but are believed to have broken down after the spendthrift Oyston refused to pay an agent that had become involved with the deal.

Despite the shocking turn of events, Riga will not walk out on Blackpool. Sportsmail understands that Riga would have to pay up a significant proportion of his one-year contract to the club if he chose to resign.

After only six competitive games and a series of false promises over transfer policy, it is a step that Riga quite understandably refuses to take.

He has taken training on Monday and Tuesday after a scheduled family holiday in Belgium last week.

A well-placed source intimated that the cold war engulfing the club should come to a head by the end of this week and Oyston may be forced to pay Riga off.

A source close the club described the players as ‘baffled and very frustrated’ on Tuesday.
