Child on the way! Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent announce they're expecting their first child via surrogate in the spring

They got married in May after dating for nine months.

And now Nate Berkus and his partner Jeremiah Brent are expecting a baby via a surrogate mother sometime in the spring.

On Wednesday, the 43-year-old announced the joyous news on his Facebook page writing, 'We are happy to announce that we are expecting our first child!'

The couple, who were the first same sex couple to get married at the New York Public Library, shared the announcement jointly on their social media accounts.

'Wanted to share some exciting news... We have had the most special year and its JUST become even more beautiful. We are happy to announce that we are expecting our first child!'

Adding: 'While we can't share much, we can say that thanks to a surrogate and the support of those we love we will officially be a family in the spring of 2015!'

Nate and Jeremiah have previously been rumoured in December 2012 to be planning a family together hoping for a boy.

According to the New York Post, Brent was talking of the subject at the Hollywood home of socialite Alex Hitz, where he told guests: 'I wouldn’t know how to deal with a little girl.'
