Jeremy Renner has revealed he secretly married girlfriend Sonni Pacheco.

The 43-year-old actor was previously reported to have split from Sonni - the mother of his 18-month-old daughter Ava - but he has now admitted they are actually man and wife and he kept it quiet to protect her privacy.

Jeremy stepped out at the Capitol File magazine screening of Kill The Messenger in Washington on Wednesday, where a wedding ring was clearly visible on his left hand.

Asked if he is married to Ava's mother, he told Capitol File: 'I have tried to protect my family's privacy, my wife's privacy. I don't need her to get hammered with my life.

'Privacy issues are important because I want her to go about her day without being bothered. Paps follow me around . . . that's fine. But . . . I don't like being followed when I'm with my family.'

Jeremy also insisted having a baby later in life is the best thing he ever did.

He said: 'It's the best thing I have ever done – doing it later on in life. By then I achieved a lot of things that I wanted to achieve; I'm so blessed for that. Now I can really spend time with the family.'

The Kill the Messenger actor also admitted he feels 'miserable' when he's away from his daughter.

He explained that he hates being away from Ava and is just always thinking about when he can get back to her.

And the protective dad revealed he will accept nothing but the best for his baby girl.

He said: 'The only that has changed is my perspective on things. I still work, probably even more. It used to be all for myself so I'm not old and broke.

'All these things I still do, but I do it now for the future of my baby, and if it gets in the way of her well-being, then I stop.

I can't wait for her to get older, but I really enjoy her now. She's the greatest. She's into her sticker phase.'

And anyone who wants to date his daughter in the future will have to first get past her movie star dad.

Jeremy explained: 'As a father, I'm going to make it very difficult for her to find a man.'

In March 2013 Jeremy confirmed he and Sonni had welcomed a bouncing seven-pound baby girl, who they named Ava Berlin Renner.

They are beyond thrilled,' Jeremy's spokesperson told PEOPLE in a statement. 'Mother and daughter are doing great.'

Us Weekly was the first to break the news of the pregnancy, saying they had received confirmation from two separate sources.

Sneaky: Earlier in the day Jeremy ensured his wedding band couldn't be seen

'They used to date but it wasn't serious,' an insider told the magazine. However, Sonni moved in with Jeremy when she got pregnant.

Jeremy was overheard telling Eva Longoria he would be a father for the first time when the pair were spotted chatting earlier at the Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles.

'Jeremy is delighted he is becoming a dad,' the insider said.

'He realises it's unconventional to have his baby mama, an ex-girlfriend, living with him and his roommate, but he just doesn't care.'

However, the couple soon rekindled their romance and found their own happy ever after.
