Kylie Minogue has paid tribute to her former lover Michael Hutchence at the debut of her Kiss Me Once concert in Liverpool.

The diminutive pop princess, 46, sang a breathy cover of INXS' Need You Tonight as she kicked off the UK leg of her tour on Wednesday night.

Taking to an empty platform, she serenaded the audience with a very sultry rendition of the hit song made famous by the late Australian rocker in the 1980's.

The inclusion of the track comes after Minogue admitted earlier this year that she still holds a place in her heart for the INXS frontman who was tragically found dead in a Sydney hotel in 1997 at the age of 37.

Bathed in the glow of a solitary spotlight, the Into The Blue crooner began her rendition dressed in a patent black raincoat, fishnet stockings and a cap.

Far from the elaborate scenes and props used throughout her other hits, she stood alone throughout most of the track before slowly taking off her coat to reveal a diamante-encrusted bodysuit in a sexy strip tease.

Hutchence, who passed away in 1997, dated Minogue for two years in the late 1980's and early 1990's.

Their love affair was recently immortalised in a two-part miniseries INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, which aired on Australia's Channel Seven in February.

As the series depicts, they famously broke up when the rocker ended the relationship over the phone after meeting Danish supermodel Helena Christensen.

Minogue later touched on her ongoing feelings for the singer, telling news.com.au earlier this year that she hasn't forgotten her former lover.

'A guy with that much charisma, it doesn't just switch off, you don't just forget about that person,' she confessed.

'I don't know what it was like for other women in his life but my love for him remains.'

The pint-sized beauty kicked off her Kiss Me Once tour with a bang and no shortage of sex appeal at the Echo Arena in the British city of Liverpool on Wednesday.

She made one sultry outfit change after another, pulling together the sauciest tour wardrobe - and show - of her 27 year career.

The pop veteran is due to continue her tour in Manchester on Friday.
