Is he the Sorcerer Supreme? Ryan Gosling 'in talks with Marvel to play Doctor Strange' as list of contenders for lead role expands

Ryan Gosling may be conjuring up a new role as Marvel's mystical superhero Doctor Strange.

The 33-year-old actor has met with Marvel Studios in recent weeks to discuss playing the master of magic in an upcoming film, according to an article on Wednesday by The Hollywood Reporter.

Marvel has been considering multiple actors for the role since talks with Joaquin Phoenix crumbled.

Jared Leto and Justin Theroux reportedly have expressed interest in the role while Ethan Hawke and Keanue Reeves also have surfaced as contenders.

It was revealed in June that Marvel also was considering Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch for the part.

According to Marvel lore, Stephen Strange was a gifted and vain neurosurgeon whose career ended following a car accident that damaged the nerves in his hands.

While seeking a cure he learned the mystic arts and later became the Sorcerer Supreme tasked with protecting Earth with his vast magical powers.

The character was created in 1963 by Marvel legends Stan Lee and Steve Ditko who also created Spider-Man together.

Ryan previously considered taking a superhero role but balked at the role of Hal Jordan in Green Lantern because the contract called for sequels, according to the article.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige in January 2013 confirmed that a Doctor Strange movie was planned.

Filming was expected to begin in May 2015 with a scheduled release date on July 18, 2016.

Gosling also reportedly was being courted for a featured role in Suicide Squad based on the DC Comics supervillain team.
