'That's sexist': says Taylor Swift on claims she writes songs about her exes as she insists she doesn't name names despite one ballad rumoured to be about John Mayer

She's known for writing songs about her former flames, with her 2010 hit Dear John assumed to be about John Mayer.

But singer Taylor Swift says anyone who assumes a track is about one of her ex-boyfriends is 'purely speculating'.

Speaking to Sydney radio station 2DayFM's breakfast show on Saturday, the 24-year-old said: 'I have a really strict personal policy that I never name names.'

Explaining the pressures of soaring popularity since her first album at the age of 16, Taylor said more people now feel the right to know what is happening in her personal life.

'You have more and more people paying attention to what you’re doing and you’ve been doing it the same way your entire time as a songwriter but all of a sudden the perspective has changed,' she said.

'And they use you writing songs about your life kind of as a way to play detective.'

Despite saying she never mentions the names of people inspired in her lyrics, Taylor's 2010 track Dear John was speculated to be about her ex-boyfriend John Mayer.

Released after the pair were romantically linked, Mayer who is 13 years her senior told Rolling Stone Magazine: 'I'm pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do.'

But despite any negative backlash, bubbly blonde Taylor says she 'could very well water it down' but choose not to as writing from the heart is the key to her successful songs.

'You’re going to have people that are going to see the depth from which you approached a song - that you put your real emotions into it and that that’s valuable and that’s good and that’s real,' she said.

'And then you’re going to have people who are going to say "oh you know she just writes songs about her ex boyfriends".'

'But I think frankly that’s a very sexist angle to take,' she continued, revealing she believes there is a set of double standards in the industry for male and female performers.

'No one says that about Ed Sheeran. No one says that about Bruno Mars,' she claimed, explaining they are both 'writing songs about their exes, their current girlfriends, their love life and no one raises a red flag there.'

Appearing on Good Morning America earlier this month, the blonde singer talked about how her latest ballad Out Of The Woods is about the 'fragility of some relationships'.

'This was a relationship where I was kind of living day-to-day wondering where it was going, if it was going to go anywhere, if it was going to end the next day.'

'You kind of never feel like you’re standing on solid ground,' she admitted. 'That kind of a feeling brings on excitement, but also extreme anxiety.'

Meanwhile her 2012 track I Knew You Were Trouble from her Red album was speculated to be about actor Jake Gyllenhaal.
