British band of brothers: How NINE sons all survived First World War despite being shot, blown up, gassed and taken prisoner

Sons

Sara Hanscombe (right), of Beckenham, south-east London, saw eight of her sons go off to the front line in Europe in the First World War, while a ninth served in England. She was already a widow when the war began in 1914 and also had a daughter. One of the brothers, Sergeant Bert Hanscombe, who won the Distinguished Conduct Medal and the Military Medal, worked as a council dustman and unveiled his town’s war memorial in 1921. Pictured are (top, from left) Frank, Bert, Joseph and David, and (bottom, from left) James, Frederick, George and Stephen. The ninth brother, Richard, is not pictured.

No entry! The 'haves' of a wealthy Michigan suburb who built FENCES across the streets to keep out Detroit 'have-nots'

This is one of numerous fences (main image) that have been erected by the wealthy 'haves' of the Michigan suburb of Grosse Pointe Park to prevent Detroit 'have-nots' from driving into the city. The brick barrier, reading 'Road Ends', represents a significant divide between the two cities, which despite their proximity, differ greatly in terms of average salary, crime rates and general desirability. In Detroit, the median household income is just $26,955 - with many of the poorest residents taking home much less - compared to a higher $101,094 in Grosse Pointe Park. Inset, two boarded-up houses in Detroit.

The 94th Annual Far Hills horse race saw a swarm of 32,000 young and liquor-craving wealthy young adults hit the track for the traditional boozing. The well-heeled revelers paid upwards of $200 to mix and mingle with old friends who brought the party in car trunks filled with pricey booze. Prior years' experience taught organizers to be prepared for debauchery -- a pack of hired state troopers ensured the 'drunkfests' of yesteryear wouldn't recur, though public urination remained as popular as the ice luge.

The real Lives of Others: German tourists relive the Communist East by spending a night in a Stasi bunker - with 'basic training' and authentic military rations

The underground chamber was built by 1970s East German secret police in a hidden pocket of forest near the city of Suhl. Designed as command post for chemical or nuclear war, it had enough supplies to last 130 occupants up to a year. Despite the temptation to forget the 'bad old days', fans now pay £87 to spend a night in the 38,750 sq ft facility in full East German military regalia, some 25 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The phenomenon is known as Ostalgie - a blending of the words for East (Ost) and nostalgia (nostalgie) - and its visitors can examine a shrine to Karl Marx (top left), tinned food from the 1980s (top right), communications equipment (bottom left), uniforms (bottom right) and the original lookout post (centre).
