With sugar-white sand beaches, virgin forests and its own mountain range, the idyllic island of Palawan was voted the best island in the world by Conde Nast Traveler readers. The island is also famous for its beautiful subterranean river (inset). Palawan beat off competition from Kiawah Island in South Carolina and Maui, Hawaii, to scoop the top spot.
Fly to the US for less than £100 (if you don't mind stopping in Iceland): Airline set to start Boston and Washington routes from March
The Wow Air flights, which will take off from Gatwick in March for just £99 one-way, stop off in Iceland before heading to Boston. There will also be flights to Washington for the same price. The budget airline air launched in 2012 but will only begin flying from Iceland to London from January. But checking in a bag will cost passengers £39 - almost a third of the price of the flight. Skuli Mogensen (above), the firm's chief executive, said the routes were 'just the beginning of our plans to transform low-cost transatlantic flights'.

Abandoned for more than half a century, the ghost town of Kolmanskop, in the Namib Desert in southern Namibia, would serve as the perfect backdrop for a horror film or apocalyptic thriller. The German-style village flourished after diamonds were discovered in 1908 but its decaying homes were left to rot after the mining field was exhausted. It was completely abandoned in 1954 and is now said to be haunted.

After decades as an underwater wildlife cameraman Darren Rice changed his angle of approach to shoot humpback whales from the sky with a remote-controlled drone off the stunning island of Foa in Tonga's Ha'apai region. Rice, 47, captured remarkable scenes of the majestic creatures in their natural state from a distance as he controlled the drone, fitted with a GoPro camera, from a boat driven by his wife Nina. In a remarkable series of footage, Briton Rice filmed a mother with newborn calves and a group of males chasing a female in part of a dramatic mating ritual.
