'Two giant babies used it as an apartment': Amy Poehler admits she doesn't like her 'blown-out' stomach or legs in new book
She may be able to make us laugh with just an expression, but that doesn’t mean Amy Poehler is brimming with confidence.
In fact, the 43-year-old comedienne admits in her new book Yes Please that there are a lot of things she doesn’t like about the way she looks – although fortunately some that she does.
‘I wish I could tell you that being on TV or having a nice picture in a magazine suddenly washes all of those thoughts away, but it really doesn’t,’ she writes in an excerpt published by People. ‘I wish I were taller or had leaner hands and a less crazy smile.

Her own biggest critic: Amy Poehler writes in her new book Yes Please that she doesn't like her stomach or her legs. She is seen here in March on holiday with boyfriend Nick Kroll
‘I don’t like my legs, especially. I used to have a terrific flat stomach but now it’s kind of blown out after two giant babies used it as a short-term apartment.’
But she adds: ‘My nose is great. My t**s are better than ever. I like my giant eyes, but they can get crazy. My ass is pretty sweet. My hair is too thin for my liking. I am on the fast track to wrinkle city. Bored yet? Because I can’t stop.’
Amy calls the voice that tells her negative things about herself her ‘demon’, and admits it has been around since she was little.
Her 'currency': The comedienne, pictured in June, used her lack of confidence in her looks to realise she is best at being funny
'They used it as a short-term apartment': Amy joked that she blames sons Archie (R) and Abel for her 'blown-out' stomach
‘In middle school, my demon would receive my school picture and gently suggest I “do something about those eyebrows,” but for the most part it left me alone,’ she recalled.
‘Then I started caring about boys. Boys, who were going through their own battles, started to point things out about me I hadn’t yet noticed. I looked like a frog. I smiled like a Muppet. One told me to stop looking at him with my “big, weird eyes”.’
Amy adds: ‘I looked in the mirror at my flat chest and my freckles and heard a sound. It was the demon. He moved in and demanded the top bunk.’
Party time: The 43-year-old posed with Jennifer Lawrence (L) and Elizabeth Banks at the ELLE Women In Hollywood Celebration on Monday
Former flame: Amy and husband Will Arnett announced their separation in 2012 after nine years of marriage. They are pictured here in May 2012, four months before their split
But the Saturday Night Live star explains that she used her lack of confidence with her looks to realise that she is best at being funny.
Coming soon: Yes Please hits stores on October 28
‘I was eventually OK,’ Amy writes. ‘If you are lucky, there is a moment in your life where you have some say as to what your currency is going to be. I decided early on it was not going to be my looks.’
She then jokes: ‘I am not underestimating the access I get as a blonde, white lady from America. Believe me, blonde hair can take you really far, especially with the older men.
‘I am convinced I could have had sex with both Tony Bennett and John McCain if we weren’t each happily married at the time we all met.’
Amy adds: ‘Improvisation and sketch comedy helped me find my currency. My plain face was a perfect canvas to be other people.
‘An SNL hairstylist once told me I had a great face for wigs! What a compliment. (And also the title of my second book.) Looking silly can be very powerful.’
The Mean Girls actress elaborated to People: ‘In a shallow business, I just had to come to terms with being really okay with not being symmetrical.
‘You can spend your life trying to be [perfect], and you can tweak and nip and tuck, and then be afraid to move your face.’
Amy also gushed about her two sons, Archie – who turns six on Saturday – and Abel, four, who she credits with keeping her grounded.
The petite blonde has the children with ex Will Arnett, who filed for divorce in April after a year and a half of separation.
Amy, who was married to the actor for nine years before they separated, has been dating Nick Kroll since May of last year. Yes Please will be released on October 28.
