'I couldn't feel my toes': Anne Hathaway recalls her brush with hypothermia on the set of Interstellar

It could be said that the biggest Hollywood stars suffer for their art.

But perhaps not quite to the extreme that Anne Hathaway did for upcoming sci-fi adventure Interstellar which she revealed to The Hollywood Reporter.

The 31-year-old described a day on set in Iceland where she was submerged in icy water for hours: 'I wasn't sure if I could feel my toes, or they started to tingle, and then I was feeling all sorts of weird flashes and things were getting a little hazy around the edges,

'and that's when I turned to our first [assistant director], and I said, "Hey, I don't know that much about hypothermia, but what are the symptoms?"

'And I explained what was going on, and he said, "Oh! Like, right now?" And I'm like, "Yeah!" And so then he went over to Chris, and Chris was like, "OK - let's roll, let's roll, let's roll right now!" And we were done shortly thereafter.'

Nolan jumped in to say: 'There wasn't anywhere to go in the vast expanse of water - vehicles adrift and stuff - so there wasn't any quick solution.'

Hathaway had suffered a leak in her space suit which was tested months earlier but still didn't keep out the water.

She explained: 'when I went under and submerged, the outer suit filled up, and then I was wearing a suit that kayakers wear, called a dry suit. And human error, we didn't close it all the way. And you're in the suit for hours and hours and hours, so there was about an inch opening in it, and I'm sitting in the water, which is not very warm.'

With a cost of $165 million which was split between Paramount, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures the movie centres around four astronauts who embark on a mission to find a new habitable planet to replace Earth.

Hathaway poses alongside costars Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain and the film's director Christopher Nolan on the cover of THR's October 31 issue.

The cast is seen in all-black sitting amongst rocks in a stark and dust-filled atmosphere - giving a hint at the type of inhospitable environments the astronauts experience as they journey into another galaxy.

As Nolan presented the award to 44-year-old Matt he said: 'he’s a performer who’s never taken his relationship with his audience for granted, he’s always understood his responsibility not just as a great actor, but as a movie star, to take the audience with him, to be the emotional conduit for the audience, to take them wherever that character needs to go.'

Interstellar has a November 7 release date.
