He's out of his DEPPth: Daniel Radcliffe resembles Willy Wonka as he arrives on Frankenstein set in full costume as hunchbacked lab assistant Igor

He’s currently in Manchester as filming for the latest adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein gets into full swing.

But while he’s charged with the responsibility of playing lab assistant Igor in director Paul McGuigan’s new film, Daniel Radcliffe was reminiscent of a far more wholesome character as he made his way across the Manchester set on Wednesday – and it wasn’t Harry Potter.

Indeed, with his shoulder length hair evident beneath a raffish top-hat the 24-year-old actor was reminiscent of Johnny Depp’s Willy Wonka in the 2005 remake of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.

Radcliffe was making an appearance outside the city’s Manchester Town Hall as the production moves north following a February shoot on the banks of Greenwich in South East London.

The actor was joined by a variety of costumed extras, two white horses and an Eighteenth Century carriage while the team prepared for principal photography around the Albert Square venue.

The Frankenstein concept is said to have come to Mary Shelley through a dream while she and her husband, poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, were guests in the home of Lord Byron.

The Romantic poet famously challenged the group to write the best horror story.

Contrary to popular belief Igor never appeared in her horror tale, but came into being through an amalgam of characters created through a number of the remakes since the original 1931 movie.

The Gothic tale has been remade countless time, most recently for the stage in 2011, where Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller alternated in the roles of Dr Frankenstein and his monster, in the National Theatre production directed by Danny Boyle.

Joining Daniel in the cast of Frankenstein are Sherlock's Adam Scott and Downton Abbey's Jessica Brown Findlay as Lorelei, a beautiful circus performer who gets close to Igor.

In director Paul McGuigan's version the story will be told more from the hunchbacked assistant's point of view, and production should continue into March next year.

The forthcoming film will also star James McAvoy as Victor Frankenstein, although the Scottish actor wasn’t present as filming got underway on Wednesday.

McGuigan’s remake was originally slated for release on October 17, but the date has since been pushed back – a move that may well have something to do with the release of Universal movie Dracula Untold on October 2.

Sorry but I think he is a terrible actor.

It's Andrew Scott, not Adam.

Good grief there are so many brilliant books out there, that would make good films, why do they keep remaking the same ones.

He doesn't look anything like Willy Wonka, both actors are in period costume.

He will always be Harry Potter in my eyes.

how does he resemble willy wonka? oh right he's wearing a top hat, never mind that the rest of his clothes are NOTHING like wonka's outfit, from now on anyone in a top hat is clearly going to be listed as looking like ownka regardless of facts.

Not sure this will reach the heights of previous films. If it has legs, it may run for a while but I think it may come up a bit short.

Maybe the Gene Wilder version. Definitely not the Johnny Depp one. Although both come with lots of chocolate so I'm not going to be picky.
