'I thought of him as this hungry scavenging animal': Jake Gyllenhaal reveals why he got 'scary' skinny for Nightcrawler role on Ellen show

Jake Gyllenhaal shed about 30 lbs. for his role as a hungry reporter in the new film Nightcrawler.

The 33-year-old actor explained the reasons behind his decision during a chat with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres that airs on Wednesday.

Jake revealed it was the packs of 'hungry, scavenging' coyotes that thrive in Southern California that inspired him to shape his character and drop the weight.

Ellen broached the skinny subject by saying, 'You lost a lot of weight for that film, right?'

'Yeah, I lost 25 or 30 pounds,' Jake confessed. 'Why not, you know? Because the character, I felt like was kind of like a coyote.

'He’s in Southern California and there’s a lot of coyotes all over the place and I just thought of him like that and I talked to the director… there’s a big part of the movie that is Los Angeles, ya know?

'It’s a huge character in the film. And I just thought of him as this hungry scavenging kind of animal and I just thought he needed to look like that.'

'It worked. You looked very hungry,' Ellen quipped, to which Jake replied, 'I was.'

Jake was definitely back in strapping shape for his talk show appearance, wearing jeans, a navy sweater and black blazer with rugged brown boots.

As journalist Louis Bloom, the 6 ft star showed prominent cheekbones and a lean and hungry frame.

Jake continued: 'I mean, when you’re driven and you have an idea and you’re inspired by something a lot of the time you’ll drive through it and that’s kind of the character and the mindset I was in but I also found myself with a lot of energy.

'You know weirdly, it's kind of like you work overtime. You get more energy because you're more tired and that's what happened. It's all in the character. It's all in the movie.'

Ellen also pushed for Jake to do a comedy after all the dark characters he's played in films such as Jarhead and Prisoners.

'You’re just so intense... End of Watch, Enemy. What is it about the dark movies that you do?' Ellen wanted to know.

'I have this belief that if you kind of go into the dark sometimes it can be illuminating,' Gyllenhaal explained. 'And I like those characters because they’re kind of fun to play.'

It was around that point that a production crew member dressed in a scary Halloween costume rose a frightening head of golden pigtails in the middle of Jake's speech, before 'crawling' away.

'Oh My G*d! What the f***? We’re done. Where’s that guy, bring him back,' Jake said, half-jokingly, although he did look a trifle scared at one point there.

Nightcrawler also stars Rene Russo and Bill Paxton, and debuts in US theatres on Friday, which also happens to be Halloween.
