'I'm paying almost the same as my old rent for my shared ownership flat': Priced out of the homes market? Not if you dare to share

With shared ownership you do not have to find a deposit - or get a mortgage - to buy the whole of your home on day one. Instead you buy anything from a 25 to a 75 per cent share of the home at the start and aim to buy more as your income rises. Denise Lawes is a big fan of the scheme. However, while many new shared ownership developments are heavily oversubscribed there are plenty of pitfalls for the unwary. MIDAS SHARE TIPS: Petrol price calculator lets IT firm Kalibrate pump up its profits

Even without the recent reductions in the price of fuel, forecourt owners change their prices regularly to keep abreast of the competition and take advantage of minute changes in oil markets. The changes are often fractional, but they can make the difference between a profitable enterprise and a struggling one. Kalibrate helps fuel retailers to maximise their chances of success in this. Listed on London's junior AIM market in November last year at 80p a share, the company is highly ambitious and the shares, now 105p, should continue to rise.

A loft conversion can add 20% to the value of your home: So what are the do's and don'ts of extending into the roof?

We're all going up in the world. From simple attic conversions to elaborate roof designs, our desire to extend our homes into the loft remains undiminished. For most people, it's a pragmatic option fuelled by a burgeoning family or the need to work from home. For others, inspired by the industrial earthiness of New York's Meatpacking District or the cavernous spaces of Shoreditch's former factories, it's more of lifestyle choice.
