Red List Training

IUCN receives frequent requests from around the world for advice on red listing and for formal training on how to use the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria. In response to these requests, IUCN has developed new and revitalised training materials to facilitate understanding and application of IUCN Red List methodology.

Red List Documents

Since 2000, all IUCN Red List assessments have been based on the rules outlined in the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria: Version 3.1. In addition, all assessments must include supporting information. To help steer Assessors through the rules and requirements for preparing high-quality Red List assessments, a range of guidance documents are available.

IUCN Red List Assessor Training Workshops

IUCN Red List Assessor Training workshops use a mix of short presentations and practical sessions to provide an interactive environment in which to learn how to prepare high-quality Red List assessments for publication on the IUCN Red List and on regional and national Red Lists.

IUCN Red List Trainers

In order to expand the global network of facilitators for Red List Assessment Training workshops, IUCN has developed a workshop curriculum to train people with good Red List experience to become Red List Trainers.

Online IUCN Red List Training Course

IUCN is working with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to develop a detailed online IUCN Red List Training course. This course will be freely available to anyone who wants to learn how to prepare Red List assessments but doesn't have access to training through a Red List Assessor Training workshop.

IUCN Species Information Service (SIS)

SIS is a password-protected, online database used by IUCN to store and manage all assessments for publication on the IUCN Red List website. An SIS self-teach tool has been developed to help the growing network of new Red List Assessors begin using this system to prepare, submit and manage their assessments.

Translations of IUCN Red List Documents

IUCN is working on expanding the range of translated versions of its Red List guidance documents and training materials.

IUCN Species Mapping Resources (GIS)

Providing species maps is essential to the assessment process.  Resources for the species spatial data can be found here.
