Terrific in tartan: Katie Holmes shows off her legs in mini skirt at Miss Meadows press conference

Her new movie Miss Meadows sees her play a prim and proper substitute teacher who is secretly a gun-toting vigilante.

And Katie Holmes certainly looked the part of her butter-wouldn't-melt alter-ego in a demure tartan skirt and a high-necked black top at the press conference for the film, held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old actress set off her A-line number with bare legs and a pair of black velvet heels.

The star - who has eight-year-old daughter Suri with her ex-husband Tom Cruise - kept her accessories to a minimum with just a gold bangle and a silver safety pin fastening her skirt.

She opted for a bare-faced beauty look, accentuating her features with just mascara, bronzer and a pretty pink lip.

She wore her brunette locks down in a sleek style around her shoulders.

Katie is excited about her new dark comedy, which is a marked departure from roles she has played in the past.

Explaining what motivates her to choose scripts, the Dawson's Creek star revealed her main aim these days is to challenge herself as an actress.

'I don’t have any fear now, I don’t have a lot of rules for myself, and I don’t take myself that seriously... I feel ready for new challenges,' she told People magazine.

The star is also hoping to move past her highly-publicised 2012 divorce from Tom Cruise, with the pair splitting amid rumours his Scientology beliefs had come between them.

'I don't want that moment in my life to define me, to be who I am,' she explained.

'I don't want that to be what I'm known as. I was an actor before, an actor during and an actor now.'

Miss Meadows, written and directed by Karen Leigh Hopkins, was released in the US on November 14.
