George Osborne is facing calls to cut taxes for the oil industry as the sharp fall in the price of crude hammers profits and deters investment. North Sea drillers are urging the Chancellor to reverse a surprise tax hike introduced in 2011 when the oil price was above $120 a barrel. But they look set to be disappointed in the Autumn Statement next week despite oil plunging to its lowest level for more than four years.

MARKET REPORT: 'Black Friday' for retailers but 'Red Friday' for heavyweight energy stocks as price of oil toys with five-year lows
The move followed oil cartel Opec's unwillingness to curb production to offset dwindling demand for the black gold. With the Brent crude oil benchmark having tumbled by nearly 40 per cent since June, weakness in oil majors was the main drag on the UK blue chips, with Royal Dutch Shell off 2 per cent or 46.5p to 2132.5p and BP down 1.4 per cent or 6p to 420.2p. Oil and gas explorer BG Group was the biggest faller in the top flight, with a decline of more than 8 per cent.

Is your 'low-cost' passive fund ripping you off? We compare the cheapest and most expensive trackers
Active fund managers are often accused of ripping off investors through the fees they charge to manage money. But even lower-cost tracker funds can have big disparities in charges for following the same markets, meaning you could be paying over the odds. We reveal the gaps to mind across the UK, US, eurozone and emerging markets.
Ten steps to sort your finances out, get richer and become your own financial adviser
There are two main choices when it comes to managing your money, doing it yourself or using a financial adviser. The value of that advice can be sizeable if it can deliver a better lifestyle, improved investments or a bigger pension. But there are also plenty of things you can do yourself. Before considering seeking advice, there are some easy steps you can take to get your finances in order.
SIMON LAMBERT: Savers are being told rates must be cut, but the savings market squeeze has turned into a nice little earner
The letters and emails have landed with depressing regularity over the past two years for savers. They often contain some weasel words, such as 'great rate', 'competitive offer', or 'rewarding', yet the overall gist is the same - your already paltry savings rate is being cut. But next time you read an excuse about the difficult low interest rate environment consider this, Britain's banks and building societies are doing quite nicely.
Estate agents prepare to launch On the Market to take on Rightmove and Zoopla, but will the property website war leave sellers out of pocket?
Websites have become the major way of buying a home in the UK, with around 100million visits from property hunters every month. Now a new website, called On The Market, is set to launch in the new year to challenge dominant existing online property giants Rightmove and Zoopla. On The Market has caused controversy because of a contract it is asking other agents to sign. This effectively bans estate agents who want to join On The Market from advertising properties on one of the other two,
'We sold in a week - in January': Don't believe the myth, winter can be a good time to sell your home and here's how to do it
While spring and summer are the busiest times to market your home, it's not always the best time to sell. Common wisdom suggests avoiding selling in winter, but some agents argue that with less properties to compete with and only the more serious buyers on the hunt, it can be a good time to market your home.
Investors up rack up 55% gain this year as India funds boom and Modi embarks on sweeping reforms - but is it wise to bet on popular leaders?
Optimistic investors have piled in, doing what is called 'pricing in the upside' as India's leader gets started on the task of transforming its fortunes. Narendra Modi, who is something of a star on the world stage, was elected last May on a programme of addressing big and long-neglected problems in his country's economy. India funds have been top performers this year, so we asked finance experts to give their take on Modi's plans and offer some investing tips.

INVESTMENT CLINIC: I would like to invest in some shares - which ones should I put my money into and how should I do it?
The first thing to be aware of when you pick shares is that you are taking on a lot of specific risk. If you invest in a fund, you are indirectly investing in around 100 companies. However, if you invest directly in shares, then you will be spreading your money across only a few different firms chose yourself - so tread carefully.
ASK TONY: My sick brother signed up for expensive TV and broadband under the influence of medication - now Virgin Media won't let us cancel
My brother is very ill and awaiting an operation to remove a cancerous tumour. He has been appealing to Virgin (supported by his oncologist) to reconsider his agreement to sign up for a very comprehensive Virgin package, including high-speed broadband, phone and TV. He lives alone, cannot work and is living on social security benefit while suffering from oesophagus cancer. He was sold the package while undergoing his second round of chemotherapy and is awaiting a major operation in November.
Spy on your neighbours to get faster broadband: You might be paying for superfast internet - but it doesn't mean you're getting it
A loophole means companies can advertise a speedy service even if as few as 10% actually get it. Price may be important but there's no point saving a few pounds just to end up with a connection so slow you can't even download an email. Many of top deals boast unlimited downloads, but very few households will actually use enough data to need such a package, so don't be suckered in by what seems like a good deal. Read the top tricks to getting the most out of broadband.
Revealed: The sneaky car cover hikes that cost drivers £2BILLION - and left this family with a 75% increase in their bill
Every, drivers spend an extra £2bn on car insurance simply by accepting the premium offered to them by their current insurer. Often this happens because customers don't realise that their annual policy has been hiked from one year to the next. They think that because they got a good deal 12 months ago - and nothing has changed since - their insurer will reward them as loyal customers the following year. But, often, nothing could be further from the truth. The Gutteridge family (pictured) suffered at the hands of their insurer.

MARKET REPORT: Property shares are on the move as Shaftesbury and Southgate enjoy big increases in portfolio value
The red hot London property market has been showing signs of overheating of late with experts suggesting that the planned General Election in May is dissuading potential buyers from making a decision to buy until they see who wins. Two quoted property groups based in the capital yesterday revealed exactly how they have profited from the boom by reporting big increases in the value of their properties.

The DVLA has also warned on fraudulent emails asking drivers to verify their licence.
