The girls, aged 16 and 13, prompted playful criticism after scowling at their father, President Barack Obama, as he gave his annual Thanksgiving address on national television. But Elizabeth Lauden, once a media director for the Republican National Committee, went a step further to call the girls 'classless' and take aim at their short skirts which 'deserve a spot at a bar'. 'Dear Sasha and Malia,' she wrote on Facebook, 'I get you're both in those awful teen years, but you're a part of the First Family, try showing a little class.' She added: 'Act like being in the White House matters to you. Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar. And certainly don't make faces during televised public events.' Sasha, 13, was dressed in a short maroon dress with a long cream cardigan that matched her thick cream socks, worn over bare legs. Her sister Malia, 16, wore black tights under a mini kilt with a grey and cream jumper. Lauten's outburst, which also slammed Barack and Michelle Obama for failing to be good role models, sparked outrage on Twitter.

Government made American hostage pay for his flight home after he was held hostage for seven months in Syria

WASHINGTON ? The only thing as bad as being tortured for months as a captive of jihadists in Syria was dealing with the U.S. government afterward, according to one former American hostage.

Matt Schrier, 36, a freelance photographer held by extremists for seven months in 2013 until he escaped, has told McClatchy that the bureaucracy he endured upon his return home was a second kind of nightmare following the months of abuse he suffered while he was a hostage.

?I never thought it would get this bad,? Schrier said.

The FBI never told his father that he had been kidnapped. It waited six months into his capture to produce a wanted poster, and only after his mother prodded. It allowed jihadist forces to empty his bank account ? $17,000 ? with purchases on eBay, even as the government warned hostage families not to pay ransom so as not to run afoul of anti-terrorism laws

New York man Matthew Schrier has told of his horrors of dealing with the FBI after returning to the US following his hostage ordeal, including how they suggested he live in a homeless shelter.
