Priest Healing:: Raid Awareness and Mobility in WoD

I think we’re all pretty accustomed to teasing our DPS for standing in the fire. But how often do we do it? Yes, us, the healers, the perfect players… Well, probably more than we should. As healers we have more liberty to take avoidable damage and heal through it. There are times in which this is acceptable, for example when channeling Divine Hymn. It’s certainly a judgment call—will the damage I take standing here kill me?  A dead healer is a useless healer. So with WoD coming up and SoO coming to a much anticipated close, I’d like to reaffirm the importance of raid awareness. Especially with regards to mobility.

Let me also firmly state: Mythic Testing thus far has been highly mobile. Even with less instants overall, healers need to move to prevent death, perform mechanics, etc. You will need to manage your toolkit with respect to how mobile you can be at any given moment.

Calculating Hasted Mind Blast’s Cooldown

One highly requested change to Mind Blast (MB) that is being introduced in Warlords of Draenor is hasting the cooldown (CD) on Mind Blast. This change allows Mind Blast to scale with haste in a similar way to damage over time abilities by reducing the cooldown by a proportional amount as your haste at the time the cast is completed. The formula for determining the cooldown of Mind Blast is as follows:

Priest Healing:: The Importance of Toolkit Synergy

I am one of those players who looks at beta numbers with a very lighthearted view. Numbers can change, tuning is something that can be done very close to a release. While it’s generally unwise to make large adjustments with limited testing, it isn’t of the same scope as mechanically changing a spec. Thus, I put a lot of my focus on how a spec feels to play. I generally ask myself a few important things when evaluating a spell or sequence of spells:

  • How is this spell altered by other spells in my toolkit?
  • Will any passives change this spell?
  • Am I rewarded or punished for using this (or not using this) spell?
  • Are there incentives that make me want to cast this spell before or after another spell?

So let’s look at where Priest healing specs have great synergy, and where they don’t.

Priest Healing:: WoD Beta from Both Sides

I know you’re all just waiting to hear about Beta. I’ll write a bit about that here, and tie it into something I feel is really important to keep an eye on, healer balance. In short, having one healer grossly under-powered or overpowered is not healthy gameplay. I see a lot of feedback actually insisting that disc should stay very weak, because they “had their time to shine.” I can’t fathom why anyone would want this, because that just means we’ll have a MoP 2.0. With a roller-coaster of buffs and adjustments which eventually hurdle us into a number one position because messing with class mechanics on live is risky business.

Priest Healing:: Warlords of Draenor Alpha Impressions

Numbers, numbers.

Pre-made level 90 priest during the first few quests.

First and foremost, let me make this clear: Discipline priests are viable. Even in their unfinished state, they’re completely capable of healing the dungeons provided for us. Disc can solo quest, and can even solo rares. We’re not in this dismal state as the internet would have you believe. That being said, we’re definitely “gutted.” And that’s okay, for now.

Discipline– The good devs giveth, and the devs taketh away:

  • Binding Heal
  • Borrowed Time
  • Train of Thought
  • Strength of Soul
  • Spirit Shell
  • Inner Focus
  • Our Hopes and Dreams….oh wait how did that sneak in here…
