Half-blind widow killed herself after her incapacity benefit was axed because she was fit enough to catch a bus

Collect photo of Jacqueline Harris in 2009. See SWNS story SWBENEFIT; An inquest will hear today, November 27 2014, how a half-blind woman crippled with back pain killed herself after benefits bosses curbed her disability payments - following a TWO MINUTE assessment. Former nurse Jacqueline Harris, 53, walked with sticks after she suffered slipped discs in her back and neck and could not use one wrist properly after she was savaged by a dog. But despite being in constant agony the widow was told she was fit for work following a Government health assessment. Jacqueline's sister Christine Norman, 57, said her arthritic sister
was asked just ONE question in the lightning-speed assessment and the decision drove her to take her own life.

Despite being in constant pain, former nurse Jacqueline Harris (left) had her benefit stopped after being told she was fit enough to work during a two-minute fitness assessment. The 53-year-old - who had claimed incapacity benefit for several years - was waiting for a major spinal operation when the decision was made by Atos, the Government-appointed private company behind the fitness-to-work tests. She was found dead at her home in Kingswood, south Gloucestershire, in November 2013, just weeks before a hearing to appeal the decision. An inquest into her death heard how Mrs Harris had been struggling with back pain, as well as a range of other injuries, since the late 1990s. But, in August 2012, Mrs Harris had been declared fit to work. According to her sister Christine Norman (right), Mrs Harris had been asked just one question during the assessment - whether she was able to catch a bus. She claims the Government had since ruled that Atos should never have declared her sister fit for work.

So which foods really ARE good for you? Interactive tool reveals the truth about chia seeds, acai berries, wheatgrass and green tea

EXCLUSIVE: Data journalist David McCandless spent nine months collating scientific studies to produce the infographic rating the scientific evidence of health claims relating to different 'superfoods'. The 43-year-old embarked on the challenge with Dr Miriam Quick, investigating the evidence to establish which studies 'really stand up to the test of science'.The finished, though ever-evolving, product divides a vast range of foods into those backed by 'strong', 'good', 'promising', 'inconclusive', 'some', 'slight', and 'no evidence' categories. And the majority sit in the inconclusive to no evidence range. Mr McCandless said: 'I try to live a super healthy lifestyle but have been frustrated by the grade of the evidence. I was left trying to find some sense in the murk. One day a study would say something was good for you, and the next would contradict it. We spent a lot of time collating the information, to make sure people aren't duped - that's the real goal.'
