37 things we miss in Seattle

|

When the Harvard Exit movie theater closes next month, it will join a growing list of things we miss in Seattle. Already this year, we’ve added to the list the “Ramps to Nowhere†and Jean Enersen’s newscasts on KING/5.

The Harvard Exit has long been one of Seattle’s favorite arthouse cinemas, beloved for its eclectic films and grand 1920s lobby (complete with piano and fireplace). Opened in Capitol Hill in 1925, its pretty brick building became a movie theater in 1968 and a Landmark Theatre cinema in 1979.

But in January, the long-time theater will go dark, Capitol Hill Seattle reported this week. The Seattle Times reported that Landmark owned the Harvard Exit with a local group, which decided to sell. “We’re sad to say goodbye to our loyal customers,†Landmark president and CEO Ted Mundorff said in a statement to Capitol Hill Seattle.

Check out the slideshow above for a look at the Harvard Exit in the hippie ’70s, along with other pieces (and people) of Seattle’s culture and landscape we miss.

Here’s more Seattle nostalgia, from Seattle TV anchors: Then and now to long-gone restaurants and stores.
