Supermarkets reeling as Tesco scraps supplier fees: Shift in strategy to price-cutting forces rethink among key rivals

The fees, known as 'commercial income' and long-established among all supermarkets, were revealed by The Mail on Sunday in October to account for one third of profits and include fees for stocking products and for displaying them prominently. Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis wants the overhaul in business practices to lead to a renewed focus for the supermarket on lower prices. Tesco was hit by a £263million accounting error linked to the payments which is now the subject of a Serious Fraud Office probe.

In 1997 I took out an endowment policy to cover my mortgage, doing so through C&C; Financial Services, run by Stephen Carroll and Laurence Currie. By 2003 it was clear the policy was underperforming, but the advisers failed to reply to my letters. Eventually, I complained to the Financial Ombudsman Service, and in 2008 I was awarded mis-selling compensation of £4,517 plus interest. C&C; Financial Services ceased trading and the Financial Services Compensation Scheme put the onus on me to prove that Mr Carroll and Mr Currie would be unable to pay the FOS award. I have spent hundreds of pounds in legal fees, to no avail.

'I buy excess insurance policy online and it covers me if I lock the car keys in the boot': Don't let the car hire fees scupper your skiing break

Car hire excess insurance is the bugbear of many holidaymakers, who are often forced into buying the policy at the rental desk through fear of facing a high bill following an accident. Excess charges have been rising steadily over the past few years. Drivers hiring in Turin, for example, can expect to pay up to £1,800 towards the bill if they do not have insurance to cover it. Put a wood-burning stove into your fireplace and it could add value to your property as well as saving money on heating bills

Soaring heating bills, environmentally-sound and clean fuels, and the return of people wanting more character in their homes have all contributed to a revival of the traditional fireplace and surround. A feature fireplace can add up to 5 per cent to a home's value. And at this time of year, the warm glow and crackle of logs burning in the hearth seem very appealing indeed. Heating just the room that you are in is certainly more cost-effective than centrally heating an entire house. Using wood as your heat source costs 2.5p per kw/h compared with gas at 4p and electricity at 11p, say HETAS, the solid fuels industry body.

British households are living further beyond their means than at almost any time in the last 20 years, OBR warns

Households are spending more money but their incomes have not increased - which means many are just eating into their savings, the government's fiscal watchdog warned. Head of the OBR Robert Chote said it is 'not plausible' that this trend could continue. Households are expected to start curbing their incomes next year until incomes start to rise again. The economists estimate that the huge gap between earning and spending is the second largest since the mid-1990s.

Interest rate debate intensifies as Bank of England and business clash over outlook

Bank of England Governor Mark Carney speaks at the bank's quarterly inflation report news conference at the Bank of England in London on August 13, 2014. ALEX BRUMMER: The oil market has behaved erratically in 2014 and continues to change our world

The 45 per cent drop in the price of Brent Crude from a peak $115-a-barrel earlier this year to below $63-a-barrel in latest trading, is a seismic shift for the global economy. Plummeting prices, paradoxically, can largely be blamed on OPEC and the traditional producers. By holding prices relatively high over several years, when much of the world was in recession, it encouraged heavy investment in higher cost non-OPEC production which has contributed to the current glut.
