Wife, Mother, Civil Engineer, Leader!

Sonya Williams, a Civil Engineer with over 22 years of project management experience on local and national construction projects.  Mrs. Williams, a Prince George’s County resident since the age of 5, completed her secondary education at Crossland High School in 1985. 

After which she attended the University of Maryland to study Civil Engineering. Her career in Civil Engineering began as a project management intern at the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission working on the headquarters building in Laurel.  Since the internship she has worked on other local notable projects including the expansion of BWI-Marshall Airport and most recently the Tanger Outlet Mall. As a Civil Engineer specializing in project management, she has honed an important set of transferable leadership skills that include the ability to communicate across different education and experience levels, build successful teams that focus on similar goals, manage multi-million dollar budgets, and manage time and resources to support reaching the desired outcome on schedule and budget.  She recently received her master’s degree in International Organizational Leadership from Georgetown University.

Mrs. Williams has used these leadership skills in the community in many different roles, most recently as the PTSA President at Gwynn Park High School since 2012.  With the assistance of the PTSA Executive Board and school leadership, the parents of Gwynn Park High School has had informative PTSA meeting that included speakers such as Dr Arbogast discussing Common Core Curriculum, military recruiters explaining the enlistment process, and representatives from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Prince George’s County Community College providing insight on enrollment strategies.  Working with a professional colleague, Mrs. Williams coordinated a visit to the school by the world renowned artist Charles Bibb, to speak with art and business students on the “Business of Art”.  In the past, Mrs. Williams has held other leadership positions in her community such as community organizer, parent association treasurer, school fundraising co-chair and community developer.  Recently, she was appointed to the Democratic Central Committee.

​Mrs. Williams currently resides in Clinton with her husband of 22 years, and their two sons. They attend Mount Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton Maryland.

  • January 2014 appointed to the Prince George's County Public School Board of Education representing District 9.
  • Immediate past President of Gwynn Park High School PTSA.
  • Served as co-Chair of the Parent Association Fund Raising Committee.
  • Project Manager on the development of Tanger Outlet at National Harbor.
  • Founder and Executive Director of CARED Inc., a local community development nonprofit organization.
  • Managed purchasing and procurement for Charles County Government.
  • Assisted in transmitting the $1.8 Billion FY15 PGCPS Budget to the County Executive and County Council for approval.
  • Raised over $50,000 as co-Chair of the Fund Raising Committee.
  • Delivered over $2 Million in low-moderate income housing and community projects in various municipalities and communities in Prince George's County.
  • Married 22+ Years.
