Eager bargain hunters wrapped themselves in blankets and scarves as they waited in the crisp winter weather for doors to open at High Street giants across the UK. While millions will be spent in shops across the country, online shoppers are expected to splash out even more, with £519,000 being spent every minute. It comes after scores flocked to online retailers yesterday, spending an estimated £236million throughout Christmas Day.

MARKET REPORT: S&N; bid talk gives Footsie a leg-up
Dealers in sparsely-populated trading floors toasted Smith & Nephew as the artificial hip and knee replacement group helped the Footsie climb above 6,600 during a shortened Christmas Eve session. Its shares flirted with November's high of 1198p before closing 84p better at 1173p after Bloomberg revived a hot jackanory that Stryker could pounce with a knock-out bid early in the New Year.

MONEY NEWS & ADVICE
Alison's dog ate Christmas cake - and cost her £500: How to avoid a shock Xmas vet bill
Chocolate is the most common reason for an emergency trip to the vets, according to research by insurers Direct Line. Grapes and raisins - which, of course, are found in mince pies and Christmas puddings - can be just as dangerous, causing vomiting, abdominal pain or even renal failure in dogs. Alison Cowell found out just how terrible treats could be last year when her five-year-old rescue dog, Tilly, sneaked a Christmas cake off the kitchen table without her realising.
Pawnbrokers to the rich and famous: They've lent £30,000 against a Hermes handbag and £1.8m for an art collection - and business at Borro is booming
The way it works is very simple. Someone who wants money brings in an item - which has to be worth at least £3,000 - as collateral. There are no credit checks or long, tedious forms to fill out. Loans are for six months. If the borrower defaults there is no chasing people for payments or sending round the bailiffs - they simply lose their possession. The firm made its first loan in May 2009 - in exchange for a pewter teapot.
ASK TONY: RBS insurance gave my dying brother a first-class flight home from Australia - shouldn't they give my sister one too?
While on holiday in Australia, my brother was told he is terminally ill with asbestosis. His hospital care has been paid for, as has my sister's accommodation and taxis to and from the hospital. RBS is sending a UK doctor and nurse to Sydney to accompany my brother on the flight home. The three of them will be flying business class, but RBS says that my sister will have to travel back in economy. Do we have a right to insist on a business class flight for her, too, so she can stay with my brother?
Interest on fixed-rate deals continues to fall as best bonds are reserved for new savers
The top fixed-rate cash Isa from Post Office at a tax-free 1.7 per cent has disappeared, along with the 2 per cent deals for two years from both AA Savings, where the deposit-taker is Halifax, and Barclays. The best one-year deal now comes from both Tesco Bank and Virgin Money at a tax-free 1.65 per cent, while for two years, it's 1.95 per cent from the Post Office, or 1.85 per cent from Kent Reliance and Aldermore. All accept transfers from other providers. Halifax has also cut its rates for new savers to 1.4 per cent for one year, down from 1.55 per cent, while its two-year rate is 1.6 per cent.

This is Money is urging Orange customers to check their mobile phone bills after a glut of readers have contacted us about sneaky extra charges for a service they never knowingly downloaded or used. Natalie Pearl, a nutritional student from Southend-on-Sea, is one such reader - she has been charged £8.99 a month by the mobile giant since the start of last year.

MARKET REPORT: Dow Jones fuels Christmas cheer as US stock market breaks 18,000 level
London's response to America's joy was fairly muted with the Footsie breaching 6600 before drifting on lack of follow through support to close only 21.44 points better at 6598.18. The FTSE 250, however, jumped 102.69 points to 16,094.23. Sold down to 350.8p last week in sympathy with the depressed oil price, Tullow Oil gushed 12.7p further to 419.7p on revived takeover hopes.
UK economic recovery weaker than previously thought: Growth since pre-recession peak revised down to 2.9% from 3.4%
The UK economy was today shown not to have recovered as well as previously thought from the great recession. It was confirmed that GDP grew at 0.7 per cent in the third quarter of 2014, showing the highest growth in household spending for four years but the sharpest drop in business investment for five years, official figures revealed today.
SMALL CAP IDEAS: Diamond miners, an investor's best friend?
The title of the 1971 James Bond movie 'Diamonds are Forever' doesn't really work when you consider many of the world's major mines are in decline. OK, the stones already dug out of the ground will outlive us by a mere two or three million years, which is as close to forever as makes no difference. But that doesn't mean we're going to keep finding new stones.

Reap the benefits this Christmas and tap into rewards of plunge in the price of oil to enjoy lower bills for petrol, shopping and mortgages
Households are benefiting from tumbling oil prices feeding through to their pockets - everything from lower prices at the petrol pumps through to reduced shopping bills. But it is not all good news. There are economic dangers, with lower oil prices hitting the value of pensions and investments. The Mail on Sunday looks at how to take advantage of the oil price fall - while protecting your long-term wealth.
Ultra-cheap mortgage deals spread to low deposit borrowers as Clydesdale & Yorkshire offer record low fixed rate
Attention may be turning to the festive season, but lenders are still releasing top deals for borrowers who may be looking for a new mortgage for Christmas. Clydesdale and Yorkshire banks have unveiled an ultra-low five-year fixed rate at 3.99 per cent for a 10 per cent deposit. It comes with a £999 fee for new borrowers and £499 for existing ones, but offers a generous gift of £1,000 cashback.
Mood among investors on the turn as confidence in major markets slides this year - but faith in UK property remains resilient
The latest Investor Sentiment Index from Lloyds shows investors have become less positive about riskier assets such as shares and property in the past year. The data suggests investors have looked towards traditionally defensive assets, with more backing for gold and bonds as the year draws to a close.
Car pooling, swapping homes with strangers and trading old clothes: Take part in the borrowing boom of the 'sharing economy'
Sharing everyday items such as a car, garden tools or a spare room with friends or strangers in exchange for money - or even just a feeling of goodwill - is a rapidly expanding feature of the British economy. The Mail on Sunday looks at how the sharing movement is taking off, what lies ahead and how you can join in.
Ahead of the roll out of a radical new bank- sharing scheme in the UK, we find out if it's working across the pond in the US
The Government is expected to roll out a bank-sharing scheme for all customers who visit post office branches from next year. If successful, it will be a fresh, but controversial move for the UK banking sector. However, in America the idea of branch sharing is already commonplace. More than 3,500 credit unions in the US, run more like mutual building societies and small banks than the UK's own credit unions, have teamed up to build a 5,000-strong network.
Revealed: The countries where British travellers get the biggest spending power boost as pound strengthens against 42 currencies in 2014

The 50 best places to live in the UK: South East of England dominates 2014 quality of life league with Hampshire district retaining top spot
Nestled in the north-east corner of Hampshire, the tranquil district of Hart (centre) has been crowned as the place with the best quality of life in the UK for the fourth year in a row. The district landed first place after being ranked highly on a number of measures. The study revealed Hart residents enjoy more sunshine hours than most of Britain, high wages and life expectancy, and the area boasts vast open spaces of woodland. Elmbridge in Surrey and Winchester, also in Hampshire, came second and third on the annual 'top 50' list compiled by Halifax - which was once again dominated by areas in the South East of England. Other top ranking areas include Warwick, which claimed eleventh place, and Richmond-upon-Thames, which was ranked fifteenth.
The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in the UK as one in four students runs a business or plans to start one in the near future
The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in Britain's universities, with almost a quarter of university students running their own business or planning to do so, according to new research. The study by research firm YouthSight of 2,000 full-time undergraduate students estimated the collective turnover of student businesses is more than £44million a year. Some 24 per cent of those surveyed were running their own business or planning to start one while studying. The most popular ventures were in technology-based solutions or arts and crafts, followed by clothing and textiles, catering and tutoring.
