The Citadel Theatre is recognized and respected as a national centre of excellence in production, creative development,and audience engagement
–the artistic and cultural heart of our community.

The Citadel Theatre is one of North America’s largest not-for-profit theatres. It is a complex of five performance spaces in downtown Edmonton. The Theatre’s core programming in the 2014/15 season features 10 plays. The Citadel also features an outreach performance series each year known as Beyond the Stage, designed to encourage people who have not encountered much live theatre to come into the Citadel and experience various forms of entertainment beyond conventional theatre offerings. A registered charitable organization, the Citadel also operates a year-round theatre school known as the Robbins Academy.

Citadel Facts:

  • The Citadel Theatre was founded almost 50 years ago, opening in 1965 in the old Salvation Army Citadel on 103rd Street.
  • The current Citadel Theatre, in the heart of Edmonton’s arts district, opened in 1976.
  • The Citadel will celebrate its 50th Anniversary in the 2015/16 season.
  • The five performances spaces of the Citadel Theatre are: the Shoctor Theatre (proscenium stage), the Maclab Theatre (thrust stage), The Club (a cabaret-style venue also known as the Rice Theatre), as well as Zeidler Hall, the Lee Pavilion and the Tucker Amphitheatre.
  • Each season, over 110,000 people attend shows at the Citadel.
  • Over 100 organizations utilize the Citadel for events, totaling over 20,000 people accessing our facility annually in addition to those patrons attending our season of plays
  • The Citadel is a registered not-for-profit organization.
  • The Citadel Theatre currently has approximately 600 donors.
  • The Citadel receives funding through grants, sponsorships and donations, as well as generating approximately 45% of total revenue through ticket sales.
  • The Citadel is a flagship theatre in Edmonton and in Canada, currently ranked among the top 3 regional theatres in Canada.
  • There is more theatre in Edmonton than in NYC per capita.
  • The theatre season runs from September to May, with performances Tuesday to Sunday.
  • The Citadel is a professional theatre company, with full-time staff of approximately 40 people. The Citadel engages actors who are members of the Canadian Actors’ Equity Association. Production and Stage Door personnel are members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Employees.
  • Every year, the cast of A Christmas Carol collects food and donations from audience members for the Edmonton Food Bank. Over the years, Citadel audiences have donated close to $700,000.
  • Each season, the Citadel donates several hundred tickets to non-profit organizations for use in fundraising activities or for clients and volunteers to attend the theatre.
  • The Robbins Academy is Canada’s most comprehensive program for creative development in Professional Theatre.
  • The Robbins Academy encompasses 4 programs under one umbrella:
    1. The Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program is a rigorous advanced training program for established and emerging theatre professionals.
    2. Young Companies offers advanced training and mentorship in Acting, Musical Theatre, Playwriting, and Theatre Production for 16-21 year olds.
    3. The Eldon and Anne Foote Theatre School is the oldest and largest theatre school in Edmonton, providing year-round classes for all ages and experience levels since for almost 50 years.
    4. Play Development provides playwrights with the opportunity to collaborate with some of Canada’s most celebrated writers..
