Are there actually people going in for interviews that can't Fizz-Buzz? by SuperSloth34in cscareerquestions

[–]DragoonDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I must have gotten lucky on that count. I went to a small university with an even smaller CS department (3 professors, maybe 100 students in the major), but a lot of the classes had a good amount of hands-on programming. The intro classes had frequent coding assignments in C++, the Architecture class had some assembly programming, the Operating Systems class required us to actually write code to handle things like forking and merging and locking and all of the other concepts we were learning about...

I understand that CS isn't just programming, and that the theory side is important, but it seems like some universities are focusing a little too much on the abstract.

It's mostly just a quick way to weed out people who can't handle the basics. If they can't figure out how to write FizzBuzz, then you can probably just wrap up the interview there and save both parties the time and trouble. If they make it over that hurdle, then you can proceed to the more complex challenges.

Write a program that prints the numbers from 1 to 100. But for multiples of three print “Fizz” instead of the number and for the multiples of five print “Buzz”. For numbers which are multiples of both three and five print “FizzBuzz”

I'm guessing that, given that description in an interview, you could probably write that pretty quickly and easily, though.

Witcher 3 dev: "Market is afraid of badly polished games on next-gen" by Dared00in Games

Very few studios are willing to to do that, and have publishers willing to let them. In most cases, a poorly performing game will simply be written off and never revisited.

I'm always very impressed when they do take the time to fix a broken game after launch, though. What Square did with FFXIV was particularly impressive, admitting that they screwed up and then essentially remaking the game from scratch.

My first thought was in-class essays. I absolutely loath them; I have trouble writing without spell-check, a dictionary, and a thesaurus. Even worse, you can't really go back and edit previous paragraphs when you're writing by hand.

Starting new job, need advice on how to reset my sleep schedule. by Froobyflakein sleep

[–]DragoonDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not the best advice, but what I usually did when this was necessary was just stay up overnight so that I'm dead-tired, then go to sleep earlier the following night (usually earlier than I'm planning to for my intended new schedule, to account for the extra sleep I'll need from being up overnight).

No idea how healthy or effective this is compared to other methods (probably not great), but it worked for me.

In the commentary tracks for Futurama, they mention that any time there are signs in a shot, even if it's just a poster in the background for a few seconds, they'll spend a lot of time just coming up with different ideas. Apparently it's quite fun.

Don't know who downvoted you, but it wasn't me; I agree with you completely. There were a lot of signs that pointed to the involvement of a government. The unprecedented level of sophistication, the massive expense of buying information on the zero-day exploits (or spending the time and effort to discover them), the obvious political motivations... probably more than aren't occurring to me immediately. I think there might have been clues in the program itself, such as naming conventions or something.
