Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens has explained why he dyes his hair blonde.

The actor, who plays Matthew Crawley, claimed that his lighter hair colour attracts more female attention.

Stevens told Cover Media: "It's fun being blonde. If I dyed my hair black now I think I could probably slink into the shadows and nobody would notice me."

Stevens also said that he was thrilled with the success of Downton Abbey, which impressed in the ratings on Christmas Day.

He added of finding the right director: "You find somebody who you trust and you go the extra mile for them. I've worked with a lot of great directors."

The 29-year-old recently admitted that he is unsure whether or not his alter ego Matthew's relationship with Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) will continue.
