SWIFTS FACE LITTLE RESISTANCE ON WAY TO LAST EIGHT

Dungannon Swifts comfortably progressed to the Wasp Solutions League Cup quarter-finals at the expense of Championship 1 opponents Ards at Stangmore Park.

The Swifts had an early opportunity when Jamie Douglas was presented with an opening only to fire his 25-yard snapshot just wide.

Douglas did have the ball in the net soon after but this was ruled out offside.

However, the Swifts did move in front with two goals in quick succession midway through the first half.

On 32 minutes a corner fell invitingly for Douglas Wilson to fire home before, moments later, Douglas eventually got his name on the scoresheet with a lob over the onrushing Graeme McKibbin.

Ards might have pulled a goal back on 56 minutes when Josh Cahoon was presented with a chance but his snapshot was well saved by Alvin Rouse.

And Cahoon threatened again with just over a quarter-of-an-hour remaining with Rouse this time tipping the ball away for a corner.

But the game was over as a contest moments later when substitute Gary Liggett blasted home a rasping effort in off an upright.

Andrew Mitchell almost added a fourth towards the end after he collected the ball on the halfway line, beat four defenders and smashed a shot off the crossbar.
