'It's gonna happen!' Winona Ryder reveals Beetlejuice 2 is finally coming together 27 years after the original hit

It's been a long time in the works.

But it seems the much anticipated sequel to director Tim Burton's 1988 comedy chiller Beetlejuice could go into production this year, according to Winona Ryder, one of the original stars.

'As far as I know, it's gonna happen,' the actress told the Huffington Post's Ricky Camilleri in an interview filmed at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, on Tuesday.

The 43-year-old didn't give any more details about the project but her input joins the growing momentum behind a follow-up to the hit movie that starred Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse.

He played a quirky spirit hired by a recently deceased couple - Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis - to scare away the family that has moved into their home.

Winona, then 17, played the couple's goth daughter who could see the ghosts and certainly wasn't scared of them.

The long gestating rumours about a follow up began to coalesce in 2013 when Variety reported that the Tim and Michael were in talks to return to the property.

Early in 2014, Michael confirmed that he would only do the movie if the 56-year-old director signed on.

'I’ve emailed Tim a couple of times, talked to the writer a couple of times, but all really, really preliminary stuff,' the 63-year-old actor told Variety.

'I always said that’s the one thing I’d like to do again, if I ever did anything again. But it kind of required Tim to be involved some way or another.'

In high spirits: Michael Keaton, whose Birdman received the Screen Actors Guild's ensemble cast award at the weekend, is lined up to reprise his role in Beetlejuice 2

And in December Tim described the film as 'closer than ever' to becoming a reality, telling IGN, “There’s only one Beetlejuice, and that’s Michael.

'There is a script, and I would love to work with him again. I think there is now a better chance than ever… I miss that character. There’s something that’s cathartic and amazing about it. I think it’s closer than ever.”

As for whether Winona would also return for the follow-up, Tim told MTV: Oh yeah, yeah yeah yeah.'
