Romelu Lukaku flatters to deceive in Merseyside derby, while Wilfried Zaha is back firing for Crystal Palace - 10 THINGS WE LEARNED

  • Romelu Lukaku was flagged offside on numerous occasions
  • He has been caught offside more than any other player this season (28)
  • Hull players collectively ran four more miles than Manchester City's
  • Wilfried Zaha impressed for Crystal Palace as they beat Leicester
  • Kevin Davies could face Manchester United in the FA Cup

Sportsmail takes a look at 10 things we have learned from an entertaining weekend of Premier League fixtures, as well as intriguing statistics from the Football League.

1. Romelu Lukaku didn’t help Everton’s prospects in the Merseyside derby by continually running into offside positions.

The Belgian striker was flagged four times in the 0-0 draw, and has now been caught offside 28 times in all this season, the most of any Premier League player.

Chelsea’s Diego Costa is next on the list at 20, with Lukaku’s Belgian international team mate Christian Benteke third on 19.

2. Hull’s players ran a collective four miles more than Manchester City’s (71.3 vs 67.3) as they pulled off the shock result of the day at The Etihad Stadium.

Goalscorer David Meyler set the tone by running 7.9 miles, with a shift that included 82 sprints, as six of Steve Bruce’s outfield players completed at least 6.5 miles.

In contrast City, rescued by James Milner’s late free kick, had only Samir Nasri and Fernandinho who ran further that that distance.

3. Wilfried Zaha is in the mood to show his claim to be back at Crystal Palace on a permanent basis is more than just talk.

The 22-year-old whose big money move to Manchester United never worked out is blossoming again under the guidance of new Palace boss Alan Pardew.

In his first game after signing a five-and-a-half year deal at Selhurst Park he was full of persistence to help earn the 1-0 win at Leicester – involved in 29 duels for the ball, more than any other Premier League player this weekend.

4. Harry Kane rightly got the plaudits for Tottenham’s thrilling comeback victory over Arsenal but two other products of the Spurs Academy are also enjoying breakthrough seasons.

Midfielders Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason are staking a claim to become the regular central midfield pair on Mauricio Pochettino’s team sheet.

Spurs have now won seven and lost only one of the ten matches this season in which the pair of them have both been involved.

5. Peter Crouch earned his equaliser for Stoke at Newcastle for his phenomenal work rate after coming on as a sub with just eight minutes left.

He ran more than a mile in that time, finished top of the charts produced by EA Sports for both average speed and top speed among Stoke’s players, and sprinted 158 metres – only 33 metres less than centre forward Jonathan Walters completed in the whole game.

6. Joleon Lescott moaned last week at being told to play left back, but he could have to get used to it.

The former England and Manchester City defender started in his preferred position at centre-half at Burnley, but got shifted when manager Tony Pulis took Chris Baird off at half time after watching West Brom go two goals behind to attacks down Burnley’s right.

Lescott ended up as the left of three central defenders as Albion completed a comeback, with only fellow defender Gareth McAuley making more clearances.

7. Whoever takes over at Queens Park Rangers, one of the first priorities will be to improve the way the relegation threatened side keep the ball.

Of the starting side against Southampton only two players – Nedum Onouha and Leroy Fer – found a team mate with more than 75 per cent of their passes.

One of the worst culprits was Joey Barton who had the ball 51 times and gave it away on 17 occasions.

8. Derby defender Craig Forsyth is making a strong case to force his way into Gordon Strachan’s starting team when Scotland resume their Euro 2016 qualifying programme in March.

While debut boy Tom Ince stole the headlines the 25-year-old was excellent in the 4-1 win over Bolton that took Steve McClaren’s side level on points with leaders Bournemouth in the Championship.

Forsyth, who made his international debut as a sub against Nigeria at the end of last season, is one of only two players who have been ever present for the Rams in the league this season.

9. First it was Emile Heskey and Eidur Gudjohnsen playing at Anfield, and now the FA Cup is giving 37-year-old Kevin Davies a chance to stroll down memory lane when his Preston side face Manchester United next Monday.

The veteran striker warmed up for the encounter with the 150th goal of his career against Coventry to keep Simon Grayson’s side in the League One promotion hunt.

Good news for United’s defenders is that Davies seems to have cleaned up some of the physical excesses that made him the most booked Premier League player before Gareth Barry edged ahead of his 99 cautions this season. He’s collected only two yellow cards so far this campaign – or does that just mean that League One referees allow a bit more rough stuff?

10. Barnet’s storming first half of the season under Martin Allen’s management is still not registering with fans in north London.

The 2-1 win over Woking that kept them seven points clear at the top of the Conference table was watched by a crowd of 2,036 that was swollen by a good number of visiting fans.

Second placed Bristol Rovers, meanwhile, drew more than three times that number with 6,528 watching them beat Lincoln 2-0.
