SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: How singer Sam Smith got trim for the Grammys

Although nominated for six awards at last night’s Grammys, singer Sam Smith attracted just as much attention at the Los Angeles ceremony with his dramatic weight loss.

The 22-year-old former lavatory cleaner from Cambridgeshire looked noticeably slim in his bespoke suit given to him by Armani.

He has been on a strict diet featuring fresh juice sprinkled with cayenne pepper which is supposed to take the edge off hunger and speed up metabolism by 15 per cent.

American ‘shock jock’ Howard Stern called Smith ‘fat and ugly’ after photographs of him in his swimming trunks on the beach in Sydney with his ex-lover, dancer Jonathan Zeizel, were published before Christmas.

‘I just want to lose weight for the Grammys,’ Stay With Me singer Smith admitted.

‘Sometimes I’m really proud that I don’t look like other pop stars.

‘But there’s also moments where I’m like, “Ugh, I wish I had abs like [singer Justin] Bieber”.’

William's chum asks: Is Amal related to Jacko?

How cruel! One of Prince William’s chums claims George Clooney’s wife Amal bears a striking resemblance to the late pop singer Michael Jackson.

Viscount Bridport’s son Peregrine Hood posted pictures of the pair online yesterday with the caption ‘lookalike’. While their sculpted eyebrows and bright red lips are undeniably similar, ‘Wacko Jacko’ underwent up to 100 cosmetic procedures on his face. Amal is thought to be 100 per cent natural.

However, Amal did wear white gloves to the Golden Globes last month, provoking comparisons with the King of Pop, who famously wore only one.

Arlene's girl to wed - but who's the daddy?

Former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips has never publicly disclosed the name of her daughter Alana’s father, but will the mystery man make an appearance at her wedding?

Make-up artist Alana, 35, has got engaged to lawyer Henry Stewart, 34.

‘Henry got down on one knee with the ring,’ Alana, tells me.

‘We were in the country so I was in Ugg boots and a Puffa jacket, but at least I’d had my nails done.’

Arlene’s younger daughter Abi is a florist and will provide the flowers for the wedding. But Arlene, 71, will not be giving Alana dance lessons before her first waltz. ‘I was a dancer too so we’re good,’ Alana says.

Jemima's First Wives Club with Zac's ex

Socialite Jemima Goldsmith seems to be forming her own First Wives Club. The 41-year-old cosied up to her brother Zac’s ex-wife Sheherazade at a pre-Bafta dinner at the weekend.

Last month, Jemima bonded with her youngest brother Ben’s ex-wife Kate Rothschild, who called her ‘one of the best friends I ever had’. While Ben and Kate’s split was acrimonious, Jemima divorced her husband, cricketer turned politician Imran Khan, amicably in 2004 and continued to use his surname until he remarried this year.

Sheherazade divorced Tory MP Zac, with whom she has three children, in 2010 after he started a relationship with Alice Roths-child, Kate’s younger sister.

The Jewel In The Crown star Tim Pigott-Smith won rave reviews for his performance as the Prince of Wales in King Charles III, a West End play which imagines Charles finally ascending the throne.

But is the 68-year-old taking his role as the ‘meddling monarch’ off stage?

Just as the Prince moans about ‘monstrous carbuncles’ littering the urban skyline, Pigott-Smith has blasted plans by the Royal Free Hospital to add a £42 million, seven-storey research centre to its site in Hampstead, North London.

‘This is a massive development that would radically affect the area, depriving us of a designated green space and creating an enormous building almost as unattractive as the present hospital,’ he thunders. Surely he should get the real Prince Charles to intervene?
