Around 335,000 visitors discovered easily new worlds

With a very good result the gamescom ended after five spectacular trade fair days on Sunday, 17 August 2014. Around 335,000 visitors from 88 countries celebrated this year's games in Cologne, including 31,500 trade visitors (+6 percent vs to 2013). This tied the gamescom 2014 to the record of the previous year and improved, thanks to significantly reduced waiting times at the game stations, the quality of stay for the visitors. Given the number and internationality of the trade visitors the world's largest event for interactive entertainment has seen an increase, confirming its position as the international business platform for the computer and video game industry. Among private visitors the interest in gamescom 2014 was once again huge: Already 14 days prior to the event all the day tickets for the private public were sold out in advance.

Under this year's main theme 'ready to play: discover new worlds' over 700 exhibitors from 47 countries presented the trade visitors and gamers from around the world hundreds of new products. The share of foreign exhibitors was 61 percent (+4 percent vs. to 2013). In addition to exciting premieres for all platforms from console, PC, online and mobile games as well as technical innovations in the section of Virtual Reality, even E-Sports has been made experiencable in a new dimension. 2014 the gamescom occupied Halls 4 to 10. The exhibition area of 140,000 square meters was completely booked. 6,000 media representatives from 58 countries reported five days in Cologne.

The increase on the exhibitor side, both in terms of the absolute number as well as the international, underscores that clear. After the presentation of the new generation of consoles in the past year, 2014 the fantastic new game worlds were in focus at gamescom and which could be, for the first time, tested out by the players themselves. The industry goes after the gamescom very confident into the second half of 2014", said Dr. Maximilian Schenk, Managing Director of BIU - The German Trade Association of Interactive Entertainment Software, to the carrier association of the gamescom. "Our exceptional thanks go to all, who have helped the gamescom 2014 to this great success, so to the visitors and games enthusiasts, exhibitors, partners and the city of Cologne, North-Rhine-Westphalia, the partner region "Nordics" and of course to the Koelnmesse, which again with its team enabled a unique gamescom."

Katharina C. Hamma, Chief Operating Officer of Koelnmesse, summarizes: "The concept of the gamescom was this year again successful. We expanded the gamescom as an international business and news platform and at the same time could increase significantly the quality of stay for our consumers. In the sense of an optimal visitor management, we have improved the routing on the site and created additional catering and lounge areas to make the stay at gamescom for the approximately 335,000 visitors as pleasant as possible. For the great and successful games week we would like therefore to thank national and international exhibitors and partners and visitors from around the world. "

gamescom awards 2014: most successful title is Evolve
On 15 August 2014, the gamescom awards were presented in public at gamescom for the sixth time. The gamescom awards are the most coveted distinctions in the European computer and video games industry. Nominees had the chance to win the prestigious prize in a total of 15 categories. Blockbuster of the evening was Evolve from Take-Two Interactive GmbH / 2K. The title won in a total of five categories: "Best Console Game Microsoft Xbox", "Best PC Game", "Best Action Game" and "Best Online Multiplayer Game". The most coveted award, the "best of gamescom award" went also to Evolve. Super Smash Bros secured himself the audience's highest recognitions. Therewith the first "gamescom most wanted consumer award" in the history of the gamescom goes to Nintendo. In 2014, the gamescom award registered a total of 140 submissions. Partner region of 2014: Nordic region
This year's partner region 'Nordics' was composed of a total of five countries. Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden were represented eye-catching in the business area as part of a joint stand and were represented by the Nordic Game Institute (NCI). With more than 700 companies, over 7,000 employees and an annual turnover of over 1.5 billion Euro in 2013, the games industry is the fastest growing industry in the Nordic region.

gamescom 2014: More than just a trade fair
With its attractive supporting programme the gamescom 2014 has fairly lived up its role as the world's biggest event for interactive entertainment. The games week 2014 started already on 11 August 2014 with the Game Developers Conference Europe (GDC). At the gamescom itself many offers like the event level in Hall 10.2 or the cosplay village in Hall 10.1 did take care for entertainment. With four new topics and an additional panel on the relationship between literature and computer games, the gamescom congress also offered on August 14 public and trade visitors an extensive programme for the technical discussion of digital games. The supporting programme was rounded off by the gamescom city festival, which 2014 attracted 130,000 visitors into the center of Cologne.
