No doubt he was familiar with the subject material when he agreed to star in Fifty Shades Of Grey but Jamie Dornan has made it increasingly clear how uncomfortable he was with the graphic content.

And the hunky actor - who plays bondage-loving billionaire Christian Grey in the raunchy new movie - revealed he repeatedly apologised to his co-star Dakota Johnson when they filmed some of the more particularly 'heinous' sex scenes.

Jamie told Britain's Notebook magazine: 'If I was about to be doing something particularly heinous to Dakota, I would apologise in advance and say, "I'm probably not going to derive a huge amount of pleasure out of this. I want you to know that."'

While viewers will be hoping for steamy scenes between the Christian and Dakota's innocent character Anastasia Steele as he introduces her to the world of BDSM, Jamie revealed he used humour to help him through filming.

He explained: 'I got through with a lot of apologies, you have to keep the intensity there, but maintain professionalism. At the end of the day, we’re all human beings and it can be uncomfortable to film things like that, so I just tried to make light of it.'

And in an interview with US Glamour, Jamie revealed that one of the biggest challenges for him was exploring Christian's penchant for bondage and sadomasochistic practices.

In preparing for his role as the powerful businessman he joked: 'One rainy Tuesday evening, I kissed my wife and baby goodnight and went to watch a dominant/submissive session in a dungeon.

'The dominant was our sort-of adviser on the job. So I watched him do his thing... I didn't enjoy it massively, but it was helpful to a point.'

Jamie is married to Amelia Warner and the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, together last year.

'What have I done?' When asked if she had any doubts about agreeing to the part, Dakota said: 'Absolutely. The whole time. Even now there are moments when I think, 'What the f*** have I done?'

Jamie's not the only one who was uncomfortable with the subject matter, in fact, when asked if she had any doubts about agreeing to the part, Dakota, 25, told The Sunday Telegraph: 'Absolutely. The whole time. Even now there are moments when I think, 'What the f*** have I done?'

Anastasia is the innocent student journalist who falls in love with a rich, controlling billionaire with a kinky side, in the film adaptation of EL James' smash hit novel.

Dakota - the daughter of Melanie Griffiths and Don Johnson, granddaughter of The Birds star Tippi Hedren and former step-daughter of Antonio Banderas - said she's comfortable appearing nude on screen, but that doesn't mean she wants her family to see it.

'It’s true that I’m not ashamed of my body. I’m comfortable and I think more women should be more confident. I think nudity and sexual scenes in movies are beautiful when they’re tastefully done,' she said'

However, regarding her family, she said: 'I don’t want them to see it. I wouldn’t want to see them doing it.'

Meanwhile, Jamie was hard at work promoting the movie with an appearance on Jimmy Fallon on Monday while Dakota was spotted out and about in New York in leather trousers.
