She was joined by co-stars and extras on the set for the flick which sees her play the younger version of the protagonist in Jim Sheridan's novel The Secret Scripture.

Sheridan's original book follows the life of Roseanne who, at the age of 100, relives her time at the Regional Psychiatric Hospital where she has spent 50 years, by writing an autobiography entitled Roseanne's Testimony Of Herself.

However, the story has been adapted for Sebastian Barry's big screen production and the movie is expected to portray Roseanne, played by Rooney, in her early years as well as at the turn of the 20th Century as an older woman, played by Vanessa Redgrave.

During filming, Rooney looked particularity downcast as she tried to throw herself into her work.

But that may of course have something to do with the recent passing of her grandmother, who heartbreaking died at the age of 85 two weeks ago.

The late Ann Maria has been the matriarch of the NFL's New York Giants for the past 60 years.

Giants co-owner John Mara announced his mother's death on Super Bowl Sunday explaining that she had slipped in front of her home in Rye, New York, during an ice storm two weeks ago and was hospitalised with a head injury the following day.

John Mara said that while there were initial hopes for recovery, complications developed and she died early on Sunday.

'I am sad to say that our mother has passed away,' said John Mara in a statement. 'She has been the leader of our family in every way, and we will miss her dearly. She loved her family, and all of us were able to spend time with her in these final days

'All 11 of her children and our spouses and numerous grandchildren were with her when she passed away.'

Among the matriarch's 43 grandchildren are Rooney --best known for her role as Lisbeth Salander in the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo-- and her sister Kate Mara, who stars in Netflix series House of Cards.
