'Beyoncé should have won': Beck praises 'genius' Kanye West after he invades stage during his Grammy acceptance speech

  • Beck beat Beyoncé to Album Of The Year for his record Morning Phase
  • Kanye stormed the stage attempting to interrupt Beck's speech in a nod to his notorious 2009 Taylor Swift moment
  • While it appeared to be a joke at first, he later said backstage that Beck should have handed over the award to Beyonce
  • He branded Beck's win 'disrespectful' and a 'smack in the face' to creativity
  • Kim Kardashian endorsed Kanye but watched on nervously as his ranting escalated
  • Jay Z's shocked reaction to Kanye's stage move was caught on camera
  • Beck has responded saying he thought Beyonce was going to win

Beck has called Kanye West a 'genius' after he interrupted his acceptance speech for Album Of The Year at Sunday night's Grammys.

The musician, 44, has responded by agreeing with Kanye that Beyonce should have won the award following his epic on-stage rant in which he criticised organisers for awarding the gong to the rocker.

In the aftermath of the humiliating stage ambush - that follows West's infamous interruption of Taylor Swift in 2009 - Beck has said that he even aspires to be more like Kanye.

Shocked to win? Beck won the award for Record Of The Year beating the likes of Beyoncé - and Kanye West appeared to be surprised as he momentarily stormed the stage

Shocked to win? Beck has said that Beyonce should have won the award for Record Of The Year and praised Kanye West after he momentarily stormed the stage at the Grammys on Sunday night

Speaking to Us Weekly after the ceremony, Beck said: 'I was just so excited he was coming up. He deserves to be on stage as much as anybody. How many great records has he put out in the last five years right?'

And when asked if Beyoncé should have won the award, he responded: 'Absolutely. I thought she was going to win. Come on, she’s Beyoncé!'

'You can’t please everybody, man,' he continued. 'I still love him and think he’s genius. I aspire to do what he does.'

Something to say? Kanye didn't go through with his planned ambush, but his face said it all

Kanye delivered the on-stage rant directed at organisers of the Grammy Awards as Beck launched into his acceptance speech for his record Morning Phase, released in February 2014.

The rapper ran after Beck as he accepted his award for Album Of The Year to argue that Beyonce should have won with her self-titled album.

Back in 2009, Kanye hit the headlines when he stormed the stage at the VMAs, and told Taylor as she was accepting her award: 'Yo, Taylor. I’m really happy for you; I’mma let you finish. But Beyonce had one of the best music videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!'.

The move prompted uproar from viewers and other celebrities, with Katy Perry complaining that it was as if Kanye had just 'stepped on a kitten'.

At the time, she responded with admiration for Beyonce instead, who invited her back up to the stage to finish her acceptance speech for Best Female Video which was rudely halted by Kanye.

Taylor told interviewers back stage: 'It was so wonderful and gracious of her.'

Asked how she felt at the stage invasion, she said: 'I was really excited because I had just won the award and then I was real excited because Kanye West was on the stage. And then I wasn't so excited any more.'

And when questioned about any hard feelings, Taylor responded: 'I don't know him but I was a big fan before, it's Kanye West.'

Unlike his stage Video Music Awards interruption to Taylor in 2009, Kanye decided against addressing the audience in Los Angeles - which prompted many to think he was just poking fun at himself. But backstage, things became a lot more heated.

Speaking to Khloe Kardashian, the younger sister of his wife Kim Kardashian who was reporting for E!, Kanye launched into a scathing attack on Beck and organisers of the event.

'We ain't gonna play with them no more,' Kanye began. 'Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé.'

What could have been: Kanye walks away after attempting to interrupt Beck's speech

He continued: 'At this point - we're tired of it because what happens is, you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental music. You are disrespectful to inspiration.'

Kanye's wife Kim looked shocked as she watched Kanye rant backstage, and eventually interrupted telling presenters they were due to catch a flight to New York.

However, she agreed with Kanye and told presenters she felt that Beyonce should have been given the award.

At one point Kim said 'I wish he had of said something [on stage]' and echoed Kanye's sentiments about 'fighting for creativity'.

She later showed her support by posting her own shock reaction to Beck's win.

Kanye then began to criticise the event organisers cutting speeches short to make way for commercial breaks.

'They run the music over the speeches because they want the commercial advertising - no we not playing with them no more,' he added.

In an interview last year, Kanye spoke about the incident and said he needed 'God, sex, and alcohol... a lot of sex' to get over it.

What's going on? Jay Z appeared genuinely bemused by his pal as he rushed the stage

BECK'S WIKI PAGE HACKED

It seems it wasn't only Kanye who was disgruntled at Beck beating out Beyoncé for the Album Of The Year award.

Not long after the awards had been dished out someone hacked into the Morning Phase singer's Wikipedia page and added some questionable 'facts'.

And it's quite clear that frustrated Beyoncé fans may have been responsible.

One amusing tidbit read: 'He is the stealer of The Album of the Year award' before adding that he took it from 'Beyoncé Knowles, the Queen of the World.'

The additions have since been removed.

Meanwhile, Beck told reporters that he agreed with Kanye and also thought Beyonce should win.

'I was so excited he was coming up! He deserves to be on that stage,' People have reported the rocker as saying backstage.

'Absolutely I thought she was going to win,' Beck added, about beating Beyonce in the category.

Asked if there was any hard feelings about Kanye's stage attack, he said: 'You can't please everybody. I still love him and think he's genius.'

'I aspire to what he does. How many great records has he put out in the last five years right?'.

But it wasn't just Beck and Beyonce that got Kanye riled up backstage.

While being interviewed by Khloe Kardashian on Sunday night, Kanye also took aim at the network E! for their branding on their microphones.

'And by the way who designs these mics? Alright it's E! We know!' he said, taking issue with the fact that four presenters were all holding mics with E! branding on them.

'We have to step up the taste levels at these networks,' he said before ordering all four presenters to remove the E! logos from their mics.

He seemed to throw further shade at the networks as he talked about the important of beauty.

No hard feelings this year: Kanye and Taylor posed at this year's event, and appear to have buried the hatchet

'The Kardashians wouldn't be famous if beauty wasn't important!' he said, and added that the Kardashians are more important than the network.

Recording academy president Neil Portnow said the almost-Kanye moment was part of the excitement of a live television show.

'It's unpredictable,' he said.

'You don't know what's going to happen. That turned out to be a fun moment at the end of the day.'

The drama certainly overshadowed British singer Sam Smith, who won four awards on the night.

Sam also took home the first award at the event on Sunday evening, handed to him by Taylor Swift.

The Grammys will be on UK TV tonight at 9pm on 4Music (Freeview 18, Sky 360 and Virgin 330).
