The New Prohibition

While prohibition may have been repealed with the 21st amendment in 1933, a wide array of activists seek to return the United States to the 1920s. These highly funded organizations advocate policies that discourage responsible drinking and limit the availability of alcohol.

Responsible use of alcohol remains an integral part of American culture. According to the annual polls conducted by Gallup, between 62 and 66 percent of American adults consume at least a moderate amount of alcohol every year. Yet despite the popularity and reported health benefits of moderate and responsible alcohol consumption, these activist groups wish to marginalize social drinkers and treat alcohol like an illegal drug.

Many of the temperance-minded individuals leading the charge to eliminate moderate drinking come from the campaign against tobacco. Though many studies show the health benefits of alcohol, these individuals wish to treat alcohol exactly like tobacco in their quest to promote "public health."
