'She feels this is her moment': Fifty Shades of Grey author EL James 'desperate' to attend this year's Met Gala - despite not being invited by organizer Anna Wintour

Fifty Shades of Grey author EL James is said to be desperately trying to get hold of a ticket to this year's Met Gala, despite failing to receive an invite from organizer, and Vogue Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour.

According to Page Six, sources close to the 51-year-old claim British-born writer claim that she has asked her representatives to try and secure her an invitation to the exclusive annual event, which takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan, New York.

'With the success of the Fifty Shades movie, she feels this is her moment,' the source said.

'She wasn’t invited by Vogue, so her representatives are asking around… to find someone who has a table to invite her to the gala.'

But while EL James is busy trying to find a slightly less conventional route into the world-renowned black tie event, Page Six also reports that Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson is believed to have received a personal invitation from Ms Wintour, after featuring on the front cover of Vogue's February issue.

'It’s likely that Dakota will be going, and James wants to be at the gala, too,' the source added.

'Fifty Shades is her creation.'

Tickets to the annual Met Ball, which benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, are believed to cost somewhere in the region of $25,000 each, for those not extended an official invitation by Ms Wintour.

Those eager to book entire tables can expect to pay upwards of $250,000, a relatively small figure when compared to the $411 million that the big screen adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey is thought to have raked in at the box office since its February 13 release.

The theme of this year's Met Gala, which will be held on May 4, is Chinese Whispers: Tales of the East in Art, Film, and Fashion.

According to Vogue.com, the theme 'will primarily examine how eastward-looking Westerners have understood, misunderstood, and appropriated Chinese culture'.

Ms Wintour will co-chair the event alongside Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence, Hong Kong-based textile tycoon Silas Chou, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, Rupert Murdoch's ex-wife Wendi Deng, Chinese actress Gong Li.

Much of the focus will be on Chinese opera, with a display of pieces from John Galliano's spring 2003 Christian Dior couture show, which was inspired by the late great opera singer Mei Lanfang.
